Jalandhar:

Hockey sticks from a factory in Jallandhar have a special finish. They use condoms to give them extra strength and gloss.

Condoms easily available have improved the quality of their product and orders have gone up.

"We use fibre and chemical and then cover it with condoms after that we take it off after three hours. It gives finish and strength to the blade off the hockey stick," said Sat Pal, worker, Hockey factory.

"We got a complaint from Korea and to overcome the complaint, we were thinking how to protect the face of the hockey. To give more strengthen and finish to the head of the hockey stick we started using condoms," said Sanjay Kohli, Owner, Hockey factory.

So successful has this process been that they have kept it secret for four years. Now they plan to apply for a patent.

At a time when the film Chak de is doing wonders for the morale of hockey players across the country, the factory in Jallandhar is reaping the benefits of its innovative technology.
