Auckland:

Sweden's Niclas Fasth defeated England's Miles Tunnicliff in a play-off to win the New Zealand Open today. Australians Simon Nash and Richard Green both had a good start at the beginning with birdies on the first. They then finished tied in third place. Overnight leader Oliver Wilson of England struggled to a 2-over 74 and dropped to share seventh place. Fasth began the day well and birdied the 2nd and 4th, and eagled the 6th to take over the lead. Tough competitionEngland's Miles Tunnicliff joined Fasth at the top of the leaderboard after his second birdie of the day on the 8th. From then on it was a competition between these two players as they swapped the top spot a number of times. Fasth missed a birdie on the 18th but looked sure of victory when Tunnicliff missed a birdie putt on the 17th. But he then watched Tunnicliff birdie the 18th from 20-feet to tie his four-round total of 266, 22-under, and force the tournament into its first playoff in five years. The two players returned to the 18th to fight it out. Hard hitTunnicliff scrambled par on the first visit, flying the green with his second shot which struck a young spectator. He chipped close from the fringe of the green and made his par while Fasth hit his second into the middle of the green but missed a birdie putt. The players hit similar tee shots on the second playoff hole and Fasth put his second shot 15-feet from the hole while Tunnicliff was three-feet further away. Tunnicliff's birdie putt slipped by the hole while Fasth, who last won on the European Tour at Madiera five years ago, rolled his downhill putt into the middle of the cup. His performance was a vast improvement from Saturday's course. (AP)
