St Andrews: Englishman David Howells holds a one-shot lead at the halfway stage of the Dunhill Links Championship on Friday, following a 65 for a two-round total of 14-under-par at the Old Course at St. Andrews in Scotland. Fellow European Ryder Cup team mate Luke Donald stands at 13-under after another 65, with South Africa's Louis Oosthuizen a shot further back. Perfect conditions for the second round of the Dunhill Links Championship, played here at golf's headquarters and at the Carnoustie and Kingsbarns clubs. On another day, a second successive round of 68 for world number two Ernie Els might have put the South African into the lead. But as it stands, eight-under-par is only good enough for a share of 11th place. Australia's Adam Scott went one better with a round of 67 to go into the weekend at nine-under for the tournament, alongside Colin Montgomerie, one of 10 European Ryder Cup players on show in this event. Always at home at St. Andrews, Montgomerie also shot a 67, despite an ugly five at the par-four fourth. Overnight leader Graeme McDowell didn't fare so well. Following his course record-equalling 62 yesterday, the Irishman came back down to earth with a bump, carding a 72 at Carnoustie. A seven at the par-five sixth and another double bogey at the last dropped McDowell back to joint fourth place, along with Jamie Donaldson and another South African, Richard Sterne. Luke Donald, bidding for his third win on the European Tour this year, began with five birdies in his first seven holes to go out in 31 and, but for a dropped shot on the 15th, would have carded a 64. However, the Ryder Cup rookie stands at 13-under for the tournament, one shot behind the leader. Ryder Cup team mate David Howell, following his 65 at Kingsbarns yesterday, shot a 65 to top the leaderboard on 14-under-par. Also out in 31 with an eagle at the 18th (his ninth), Howell came back in 34 and finished off with a birdie to take a one-shot lead into the weekend. Having finished third at the W.G.C. event at Mount Juliet in Ireland last week, Howell is certainly the man in form at the moment and is clearly the man to beat at the halfway stage of the Dunhill Links Championship.
