Villarreal signs Fuentes, Cygan

Villarreal has signed Argentine defender Fabricio Fuentes from Atlas of Mexico and French defender Pascal Cygan from Arsenal pending routine medical exams.

Villarreal has signed Argentine defender Fabricio Fuentes from Atlas of Mexico and French defender Pascal Cygan from Arsenal pending routine medical exams. Fuentes and Cygan will help the Spanish team replace Argentine Gonzalo Rodriguez, who recently seriously injured his knee and will be sidelined most of the season. Villarreal gave no financial details of the acquisitions, athough news reports said Arsenal will receive $3.8 million for Cygan. The 29-year-old Fuentes, who has agreed to a three-year contract, has been called up for Argentina's friendly with Brazil in London on Sunday. He previously played for Newell's Old Boys, Velez Sarsfield and France's Guingamp. The 32-year-old Cygan, who spent four seasons with Arsenal, has agreed to a two-year contract. Villarreal, which reached Champions League semifinals last season, drew 0-0 with Real Madrid in its opening game of the season. (AP)
