Dakar, Senegal:

French veteran Alain Giresse has been appointed coach of Senegal's national football team.

Senegalese football federation president Augustin Senghor made the announcement Wednesday.

Giresse replaces Joseph Koto, who was fired in October following the team's failure to qualify for the African Cup of Nations.

Giresse has a two-year contract that will take him through the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and the 2015 African Cup of Nations in Morocco.
