Douala:

Samuel Eto'o has been dropped as Cameroon's national team captain and permanently replaced by midfielder Stephane Mbia.

The Cameroon Football Federation announced the move on Tuesday and said it was a decision taken by the sports ministry.

Eto'o was already left out of coach Volker Finke's initial squad for the final round of African Cup of Nations qualifiers starting next month. It could signal the end of the 33-year-old striker's international career.

Cameroon was embarrassed at the World Cup in Brazil under his leadership. It lost all three of its games and was so poor in a 4-0 loss to Croatia that it led to accusations of match-fixing. Injury meant Eto'o only played in Cameroon's opening game.

Players also threatened to go on strike over World Cup bonuses.
