Amsterdam:
Wayne Rooney was sent off in the first half of Manchester United's friendly against Portuguese champion FC Porto after scoring in the 3-1 win.
Rooney, who was also ejected in England's World Cup quarterfinal loss to Portugal, was given the red card in the 42nd minute in the first match of the LG Amsterdam Tournament for a challenge on defender Pepe Ferreira.
Rooney put his hand in Ferreira's face as the two leaped to head a ball close to the centre line.
Manchester United coach Alex Ferguson criticised the referee's decision.
"I've seen the incident with Wayne and it was innocuous," said Ferguson. "You would think common sense and fairness would prevail. It's a ridiculous decision, but we will have to wait and see what happens."
Scholes dismissed
Paul Scholes was also dismissed after getting a second yellow card in the 68th, seconds after he got the captain's armband from the departing Ryan Giggs.
Earlier, Rooney scored Manchester United's second goal with a deft chip. Scholes scored United's first goal to give the Red Devils a 2-0 lead at halftime.
Rooney's World Cup campaign ended in disgrace when he was sent off for stomping on Portugal defender Ricardo Carvalho's groin.
