Real Madrid said on Tuesday it is close to signing Italy's World Cup winning captain Fabio Cannavaro. "There are things in an advanced stage and we are going to do everything we can to bring him here. There will be news in the next few days," Real Madrid sports director Peja Mijatovic said on the club's Web site. Cannavaro, a 32-year-old Juventus defender, was widely considered one of the top players of the World Cup. Italy beat France on penalties in Sunday's final. Juventus, Italy's domestic champion the past two years, risk being relegated to third-tier Serie C in the country's match-fixing scandal. Real Madrid has not won a trophy in three years despite a glittering lineup that boasts players like Ronaldo and David Beckham. Last week, former Juventus coach Fabio Capello was hired as Real's new coach. (AP)
