Real Madrid took on bottom placed Tenerife at home and inside 15 minutes they were in the lead. Luis Figo was brought down just outside the area and Roberto Carlos fired in one of his trademark free kicks to put Real ahead.

And it was 3-1 in the 75th minute after Jose Mari Guti fired home from a Roberto Carlos cross. Eight minutes later Real sealed the points as Guti once again tapped home from Savio's cross. And 4-1 was the final score with Real Moving onto the top of the table.
Celta Vigo vs FC Barcelona
Barcelona were on the road against Celta Vigo and with 25 minutes gone Celta were in the lead. Fernando Caceres' cross from the right was bundled home by Alexander Mostovoi.
Celta doubled their lead into the second half after Gustavo Lopez scored from a free kick. Barcelona managed to pull one back through Rivaldo but it was too little too late. Barcelona suffered their 10th defeat of the season.
Valencia vs Deportiva La Coruna
With Real Madrid temporarily on top of the La Liga, Valencia knew a win and the title could be heading to the Mestalla for the first time in 34 years. Into the second half, a spectacular overhead kick from Ruben Baraja only managed to hit the cross bar.
Valencia finally broke the deadlock after Pablo Aimar's free kick was unfortunately deflected by none other that Aldo Pedro Duscher. The final score read 1-0 to Valencia and the destiny of the title was now in their own hands.
