Eindhoven:
Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven go into the winter break in the Eredivisie with an 11-point lead after round 20.
PSV defeated ADO Den Haag 2-1 on Saturday (30/12). Their two closest rivals - Ajax Amsterdam and AZ Alkmaar - were both held to draws.
They'd seen their closest rivals Ajax held at Nijmegan earlier in the day.
Could PSV Eindhoven take full advantage when they played host to struggling Den Haag on Saturday (30/12) and extend their lead at the top of the Dutch Eredivisie?
The answer was "yes" - though not a resounding one. Granted, they dominated Lex Schoenmaker's side - but possession and chances weren't easily converted into goals.
It took the veteran Patrick Kluivert to open the scoring in the 33rd minute.
Coach Ronald Koeman couldn't relax though, until Peruvian striker Jefferson Farfan hit a dramatic second, three minutes after the restart.
Den Haag 'keeper Robert Zwinkels was almost caught out again at his near post by Carlos Salcido.
Instead though, Wesley Verhoek ensured a nervous climax at the Philips Stadium for most of the 33,500 spectators.
His 78th minute goal made it 2-1. That though, was as close as it got, meaning PSV head into the winter break with an 11-point cushion over Aax.
Alkmaar could have nibbled into that advantage, but were held to a 2-2 draw by Roda on Sunday. (AP)
