The Unites States' women's team delivered a thumping blow to Japan in the final of the FIFA Women's World Cup to win their first title in 16 years, on Sunday. Their achievement was hailed by Google in a doodle which captured the celebrations in a series of caricatures. (Complete match report)
Carli Lloyd, the American captain, struck three times inside 16 minutes as the U.S. stormed into an unexpected and unsurmountable 4-0 lead over their shell-shocked opponents. (In pics: Meet the men behind success of US women's team)
Japan, winners four years ago, were utterly stunned as their opponent's deadly finishing ensured the U.S. added to their 1991 and 1999 titles and became the first nation to win the Cup three times.
The game, played in front of 53,341 spectators at a packed BC Place, was the highest-scoring Women's World Cup final ever and, for non-Japanese at least, was an entertaining finale to what has been an excellent tournament.
President Barack Obama led the celebrations by tweeting his wishes for the team. "What a win for Team USA! Great game Carli Lloyd! Your country is so proud of all of you," Obama tweeted from his @POTUS handle, hailing Lloyd's three-goal performance. "Come visit the White House with the World Cup soon," he added. (Read more here)
