Morocco shock Nigeria with 1-0 win

Monastir:

Morocco produced a big upset by beating Nigeria 1-0 in an African Cup of Nations Group D match in Monastir, Tunisia on Tuesday. Morocco substitute Youssef Hadji came off the bench to score the only goal of the game in the 77th minute. Nigeria were expected to get off to a winning start in Group D, with their team packed full of European-based stars. But Morocco showed scant regard for reputation, and took the game to Nigeria with some enterprising football. Striker Marouane Chammakh should have put Morocco ahead early on, when playmaker Jawad Zairi delivered a pin-point cross into the box. The first half produced little else, and the teams turned with the match goalless. Early in the second half, Nigeria had a rare opportunity to take the lead, when a long ball over the top found Aiyegbeni Yakubu. But the Portsmouth striker shot wide from a good position, and with that went Nigeria's best chance of a goal. Morocco hit back to dominate the remainder of the match, and they took the lead in the 77th minute. Abdelkrim Kaissi picked out substitute Youssef Hadji in the Nigeria box, and the unmarked striker took advantage of the time afforded to him, to swivel and score from close range. Not content to sit on their lead, the Moroccans pushed for a second goal, and Chammakh came close to putting the result beyond doubt. Substitute Mohammed El Yaagoubi flicked the ball through for Chammakh, but his left-foot shot clipped the post and fell comfortably for Nigeria goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama. The Nigerians were desperate for an equaliser and were gifted one final opportunity to level the match. After a long ball over the top, Morocco goalkeeper Khalid Fouhami failed to clear the ball, and it fell to substitute Victor Agali. His header, though, flew over the bar, and with that went Nigeria's hopes of stealing a point. Morocco were able to celebrate a famous victory. (AP)
