Manchester, England:

Manchester City suspended midfielder Joey Barton for the rest of the season for fighting with teammate Ousame Dabo at a training session on Tuesday.

Sky Sports News and the BBC reported that Barton has been suspended for the club's final Premier League games against Manchester United on Saturday and Tottenham on May 13.

They said Barton hit Dabo, who had to go to the hospital with injuries to his mouth.

"As far as I've heard, he was defending himself _ but because it is Joey it makes headlines," Barton's agent, Willie McKay, told the BBC's Web site.

"It happens on training grounds all over the country, from Chelsea to Yeovil."

Man City did not confirm the identity of the player.

"We can confirm that a player has been suspended until the end of the season, pending an internal investigation into a training incident at the Carrington complex," Manchester City spokesman Paul Tyrrell said.

The 24-year-old Barton won his first England call up in February, making a late substitute's appearance in a 1-0 friendly loss to Spain on Feb. 7.

Barton, who has a history of disciplinary problems, began as a trainee at Man City in 2001.

In October, he was fined 2,000 pounds for dropping his shorts and exposing his backside to rival fans after a Premier League game.

In July 2005, Barton was sent home from Man City's tour of Thailand and fined six weeks wages after a bar fight with a teenage Everton fan.

In December 2005, his 17-year-old brother, Michael, was sentenced to more than 17 years in prison for taking part in a racist attack in which two white men killed a black teenager with a mountaineering axe.

In 2004, Barton started a brawl on the field during a preseason friendly against Doncaster. He was also fined six weeks wages for stubbing a lit cigar into the eye of a young teammate, Jamie Tandy, at City's Christmas party.
