Liverpool, England:

Liverpool advanced to the second round of the Champions League after beating Bordeaux 3-0 Tuesday in Group C. Luis Garcia scored two goals and Steven Gerrard added another for the five-time champions, who have 10 points from four games. PSV Eindhoven also clinched a place in the next round, beating Galatasaray 2-0 and also improving to 10 points. Both Bordeaux and Galatasaray have one point. Garcia gave Liverpool a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute, taking a cross from Gerrard and scoring with a blistering volley. Bordeaux's Fernando Menegazzo was sent off on a red card in the 67th for violent conduct, which cleared the way for the Reds. Gerrard added another goal in the 71st, and Garcia scored his second two minutes later. The victory took some of the pressure off manager Rafa Benitez, who has been criticised for continually switching his starting lineup. The goal will also relax Gerrard who has been reported to be unhappy playing on the right side of midfield. "You look at my performance tonight, it didn't look unsettled," Gerrard said. "I will be at Liverpool for many years to come and I'm loving every second." Gerrard also defended Benitez, who led the club to this title in 2005. "You have to believe in what he (Benitez) says, whatever team he puts out," Gerrard said. "Our form has been inconsistent and it is up to the players to improve that." (AP)
