FIFA World Cup: How England's Hopefuls Fared in Friendly

With England's World Cup opener just two weeks away, Friday's 3-0 friendly win over Peru gave manager Roy Hodgson a chance to run the rule over the candidates for a starting place in Brazil.

Hodgson admits he is still uncertain who will feature against Italy in Manaus, here's a closer look at five players with a point to prove at Wembley:

Daniel Sturridge

After scoring the winner in England's last friendly against Denmark, the Liverpool striker has emerged as Hodgson's preferred partner for Wayne Rooney and this lively display, capped by a sublime 32nd minute opener, surely cemented his place. The goal, his fourth in 11 appearances for England, was a thing of beauty as he cut in the from the right, held off a challenge and curled a fierce left-footed shot into the top corner.

Adam Lallana

With Liverpool in the midst of completing a £30 million ($50m, 37m euros) swoop for the Southampton midfielder, Lallana could have been forgiven if his mind was elsewhere. But, starting wide on the right, Lallana didn't take long to underline his growing reputation with a mazy run through the heart of the Peru defence that set up a good chance for Daniel Sturridge. Looked by far the most inventive of England's attackers before coming off in the 72nd minute and, while his place is not yet secure, he is a potential game-changer in Brazil.

Jordan Henderson

Selected alongside his Liverpool colleague Steven Gerrard as one of England's two holding midfielders, Henderson's first contribution was to give the ball away and then concede a foul trying to make amends. Has no problem doing the hard running required in the role, but that inauspicious start paved the way for the kind of anonymous performance which suggested Hodgson will consider the merits of Jack Wilshere and Ross Barkley in the remaining friendlies against Honduras and Ecuador.

Raheem Sterling

Introduced as a 66th minute replacement for Wayne Rooney, the Liverpool winger had few opportunities to reprise his man of the match performance against Denmark. While the 19-year-old saw relatively little of the ball, he did show quick feet to curl one shot wide and his potent combination of pace and skill give him a good chance to make an impact in Brazil. Never overawed and his ability to play anywhere across the advanced midfield will prove invaluable.

Phil Jagielka

By his own admission, the Everton centre-back is not 100 percent match fit after only returning from a hamstring injury two games before the end of the season and inevitably he looked rusty at times. Although he scored England's third goal, converting from close-range for his second international strike after Peru goalkeeper Raul Fernandez dropped a 70th minute corner, he needs to get up to speed quickly. This was the first time he had played alongside Gary Cahill since October and Peru's unheralded forward line were able to pierce the heart of the England defence on several occasions.
