The injury forced him out of training Sunday, though he resumed training the next day. Marko Devic was chosen as a replacement by Ukraine coach Oleg Blokhin, who made three further changes to his starting lineup.
He favored Artem Milevskiy instead of Andriy Voronin up front, and picked Yaroslav Rakitskiy and Denys Garmash instead of Taras Mikhalik and Serhiy Nazarenko.
Ukraine must beat England to advance to the quarterfinals.
For England, the only change to the starting XI which faced Sweden sees Wayne Rooney return as expected following the completion of his two-match suspension.
Rooney returns in attack in place of Andy Carroll, the Liverpool striker.
