Berlin:

Bayern Munich's Germany defender Jerome Boateng was on Monday banned for the next two German league games after he was sent off in the Bundesliga leaders' shock defeat at Hannover on Sunday.

The 23-year-old was shown a straight red card for a shove on Hannover defender Christian Schulz, which sparked a first-half melee in a bad-tempered match that saw Bayern beaten 2-1.

The disciplinary committee of the German Football Federation (DFB) gave Boateng the ban, which keeps him out of Saturday's league visit of Nuremberg and the game on November 6 against Augsburg.

Bayern claim Hannover midfielder Sergio Pinto started the incident that led to Boateng's dismissal and chief executive officer Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has branded the Hannover player an "actor" for his conduct.

"The player, head coach, board of directors and director of sport have agreed to accept the penalty," said the club in a statement.

"However, we would explicitly advise that the entire incident was initially provoked by the completely over-the-top and theatrical behaviour of Hannover player Sergio Pinto.

"We are also of the opinion that double standards have been applied in this case. Hannover player Christian Schulz started the pushing, with Boateng only then joining in as a spontaneous reaction.

"Schulz was shown a yellow card, but Boateng a red. We cannot understand why different standards have been applied to the same offence."

Bayern are top of the league and three points clear despite Sunday's defeat, which was only their second of the season.
