Berlin:
Bayern Munich beat Eintracht Frankfurt 1-0 in the final of the German Cup in Berlin on Saturday. Roy Makaay should have given Bayern the lead in the 35th minute, but the Dutchman headed wide of the target with the goal at his mercy. The German champions opened the scoring in the 59th minute, as Claudio Pizzaro headed in a measured corner kick from second half substitute Ze Roberto. Pizzaro towered over two Frankfurt defenders and steered the ball past goalkeeper Oka Nikolov. Precious opportunities Frankfurt's chances were few and far between, but the underdogs had a good chance to grab an equaliser in the final minutes. Francisco Copado's corner kick fell to Ioannis Amanatidis, whose shot on the turn brought a brilliant save from Bayern goalkeeper Oliver Kahn. The ball was fired back in on the rebound, but Michael Ballack made a timely block and Bayern cleared the danger. Kahn's heroics proved crucial as the final whistle came moments later and Bayern's captain later lifted the German Cup. It was a record 13th German Cup success for Bayern, and a second in a row. They can complete a second successive league and cup double when they host VfB Stuttgart in the Bundesliga on Wednesday. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
