Bangkok:

The AFC Asian Cup has reached the quarterfinal stage and there was some good news for Iraqis, as the country's football team once again gave hope to the war torn nation.

Two goals from skipper Younis Mahmoud saw them blank Vietnam and reach the last four for the first time since 1976.

Both Iraqi goals came through set-pieces and though Vietnam had their chances, a brilliant free-kick sealed the Iraqi victory.

The football team is celebrated as national heroes and had stunned the world, reaching the semis at the 2004 Athens Olympics.

In the other quarterfinal on Saturday, Japan beat Australia 4-3 on penalties, following a 1-1 tie at extra time.
