Germany last won the European Championship in 1996 and finished runners-up to Spain in 2008. The last two editions have seen Spain dominate the continental championship and the Germans will be desperate to reclaim glory, especially after being crowned the world champions in 2014.
Ukraine, however, will be buoyed by the Germany's questionable recent form.
The qualifying campaign started badly, and Germany were then beaten 3-2 by England in March - a match in which the English tore apart the world champions' defence late on.
But as many already know, Germany are a classic 'tournament team'. Joachim Low's team always take it up another gear when the competitive games roll around.
Germany and Ukraine have met five times, with two German wins and three draws. Germany could beat Ukraine for the first time outside the borders of their home country. Both wins for Germany came in home matches, the three matches in Ukraine ended in a draw.
The Germans will be gunning to make a fast start and send out a stern warning to the likes of Spain and hosts France. But Ukraine cannot be discounted with some players like Vktor Kovalenko, coming into the tournament after starring for club - Shakhtar Donetsk.
