Lisbon, Portugal:

Hugo Viana will replace injured midfielder Carlos Martins in Portugal's squad for the European Championship.

The Portuguese Football Federation said on Wednesday that Martins, who plays for Granada in Spain, won't recover from a muscle strain in his left leg in time for next month's tournament.

Viana has 26 caps but played no part in Portugal's qualifying campaign. Coach Paulo Bento said the left-side Braga midfielder didn't fit into Portugal's tactical scheme.

Portugal are in Group B with Germany, Netherlands and Denmark at Euro 2012, which begins on June 8.
