Cricket is reaching new highs in India, quite literally. With several majestic grounds built at high altitudes, the sport has often been played in scenic locales - much to the joys of players as well as fans.
The Chail (near Shimla) cricket ground is the highest in the world at 7,380 feet above sea level while the Dharamsala Cricket Ground has hosted several international and Indian Premier League matches. Their statistical reputation though is all set to be challenged with a stadium being proposed at Lahaul-Spiti - at an astounding altitude of 10,235 feet above sea level.
Lahaul-Spiti has always been known as a sublime tourist destination for the adventurous souls. It will take more than just a sense of adventure though to both build and play here.
According to a report in a national daily, the District Cricket Association of Lahaul-Spiti has been planning to construct a stadium in the Sissu village here. It's location will be adjacent to a lake, snow-clad mountains and the Chenab river. If and when constructed, it would be the highest cricket stadium in the world.
The task at hand is not easy though. Financial assistance from Board of Control for Cricket in India and the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association is unlikely. This is due to the fact that another association here is the officially registered body with HPCA. There has been some progress though as clearances from forest and revenue departments have been sought and received. The approximately 3.2 hectares of land will now need to be acquired.
Expected to be built on the lines of the HPCA stadium in Dharamsala, the venue here will indeed be a marvel of human endeavor if all goes as per plan.
