Kolkata:
Former Australian cricket captain Steve Waugh today lauded the decision of the International Cricket Council (ICC) to cancel the Test series between Zimbabwe and Australia.
Waugh also asked the African country to sort out the crisis on its own.
"ICC has done the right thing by cancelling the Test match series," said Waugh, who was here on a short visit to the metropolis to promote AMP-Sanmar life insurance.
Terming the ongoing crisis in Zimbabwe cricket as "a major issue," he said, "When a side is picked on the basis of colour, then there is something seriously wrong in that. That has to be rectified."
Waugh said he was glad that the Test series had been called off, adding "Zimbabwe cricket needs to sort itself out".
Deep crisis
Zimbabwe cricket had plunged into a crisis in early April when all the top cricketers led by skipper Heath Streak resigned following differences with the officials of Zimbabwe Cricket Union.
Ignoring their demand ZCU picked up a highly inexperienced and mainly black side led by 20-year-old keeper Tatenda Taibu.
The team suffered humiliating defeats at the hands of Sri Lanka in the subsequent series prompting ICC to consider stripping the Zimbabwe-Australia series from May 21 of Test status.
This was, however, was avoided by cancelling the series. (PTI)
