KL Rahul | 123 | 260 | 17 | 1 | 47.30 |
c Quinton de Kock b Kagiso Rabada
94 OUT! TAKEN! Kagiso Rabada gets the big fish, the centurion. He is absolutely delighted. Lets out a huge roar. He needed that wicket, he was off color so far but that should give him a big boost. Rahul does not add a lot to the score he finished on Day 1. A good sharp short one, maybe Rahul was not expecting it. He goes for the pull but is late on it, it goes off the glove and de Kock takes it nicely by moving to his left. A really good innings from Rahul comes to an end but can South Africa now capitalize? 278/4

Mayank Agarwal | 60 | 123 | 9 | 0 | 48.78 |
lbw b Lungi Ngidi
40.2 OUT! LBW! Good-length ball, on middle and leg, angling in. Mayank Agarwal looks to tuck but misses. He gets rapped on the pads. Lungi Ngidi pleads the umpire for an lbw but the umpire says no. Dean Elgar takes his time and then reviews it. UltraEdge shows no bat involved. Ball Tracking shows it is pitching outside off and wickets hitting. An excellent review from South Africa. They finally get the breakthrough and Mayank Agarwal takes the long walk back. A little shake of head from him as he walks back. 117/1

Cheteshwar Pujara | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | |
c Keegan Petersen b Lungi Ngidi
40.3 OUT! CAUGHT! Ngidi has two-in-two! Cricket can be a cruel game sometimes. India put on a 117 opening stand and now have lost two wickets in two balls. Good-length ball, outside off. Cheteshwar Pujara puts a stride forward and looks to block. The ball goes off the inside edge, gets hit on the pads and then lobs up in the air towards short leg. Keegan Petersen is present over there and takes the simplest of catches. Cheteshwar Pujara started walking straightaway. Departs for a golden duck. Lungi Ngidi is pumped up and is on a hat-trick as well. 117/2
|
|||||
Virat Kohli C | 35 | 94 | 4 | 0 | 37.23 |
c Wiaan Mulder b Lungi Ngidi
68.2 OUT! EDGED AND TAKEN! Ngidi gets yet another one and Kohli falls 15 short of a half ton. Kohli will be gutted with himself. He had shown good patience and looked really solid so far but falls to a delivery which one can probably say is a harmless one. This is just behind a driving length and outside off, shapes away further. Kohli looks to drive by reaching out for it. It goes off the outside edge and it is pounched by Mulder at first slip. We normally see Elgar at first slip but he has opted to stay in the outfield as he wants to be closer to the bowler so that he can have a chat with him on regular basis. Is this the opening South Africa needed? Also, that seemed a plan by Ngidi. He kept bowling wide outside off to Kohli. Kohli was leaving it well but probably due to the length there, he went after it. 199/3
|
|||||
Ajinkya Rahane | 48 | 102 | 9 | 0 | 47.05 |
c Quinton de Kock b Lungi Ngidi
96.4 OUT! EDGED AND TAKEN! So the two overnight batters are gone! This is an excellent start to Day 3 for South Africa. Rahane walks off after getting off to a start. He did not pick the right ball to cut there. It was not that short and there was not a lot of width on offer. Rahane slashes, it goes off the outside edge and de Kock does the rest. 291/5
|
|||||
Rishabh Pant Wk | 8 | 13 | 1 | 0 | 61.53 |
c Rassie van der Dussen b Lungi Ngidi
98.2 OUT! CAUGHT! Another wicket falls for India and Lungi Ngidi has a five-fer to his name. He has been the pick of the lot and deservedly gets another wicket. Pitches this one, on a length, on leg. Rishabh Pant looks to flick but gets an inside edge. The ball lobs off the pads to short leg and Rassie van der Dussen takes a simple catch there. His teammates are all over Lungi Ngidi and gets an applause from his team management as well. Lungi Ngidi is all pumped up and celebrated his five-wicket haul by flexing his muscles. 296/7
|
|||||
Ravichandran Ashwin | 4 | 5 | 1 | 0 | 80 |
c Keshav Maharaj b Kagiso Rabada
97.4 OUT! TAKEN! Another one bites the dust and it is all falling apart now for India! Rabada has another one. This is angled into the pads, extra bounce on this one. Ashwin looks to nudge it on the leg side but it goes off the higher part of the bat and lobs towards cover. Maharaj takes an easy catch. 296/6
|
|||||
Shardul Thakur | 4 | 8 | 1 | 0 | 50 |
c Quinton de Kock b Kagiso Rabada
100 OUT! EDGED AND TAKEN! Yet another wicket and Rabada continues the good work he had begun! Thakur's uncomfortable stay comes to an end. Outside off, fuller. Thakur goes for the expansive drive but his feet are glued to the crease. It goes off the outside edge and it is taken by the keeper. 304/8
|
|||||
Mohammed Shami | 8 | 9 | 2 | 0 | 88.88 |
c Quinton de Kock b Lungi Ngidi
100.5 OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! Looks like it is catching practice for South Africa. India after all the advantage on Day 1 are tumbling down. This was on a good length, outside off. Mohammed Shami looks to heave it away. He swings his bat hard but the ball kisses the outside edge. Quinton de Kock takes another simple catch. South Africa have done really well to crawl their way back into the game. 308/9
|
|||||
Jasprit Bumrah | 14 | 17 | 2 | 0 | 82.35 |
c Wiaan Mulder b Marco Jansen
105.3 OUT! CAUGHT! There comes the final wicket! Back of a length ball, outside off. Jasprit Bumrah looks to guide it over the slip cordon but couldn't do so. The ball goes straight into the hands of Wiaan Mulder at gully. He takes a good catch and the debutant, Marco Jansen gets his first international wicket as well. India finish with 327. 327/10

0.5 OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! There's the first early wicket. Just the start India would have hoped for. Jasprit Bumrah is all pumped up and he is off celebrating. Gets the breakthrough for his team and it is, the South African skipper, Dean Elgar who departs for a timid score. This was on on length, on off, moving away. Dean Elgar is stuck at his crease. He had to play the shot but the ball goes off the outside edge and carries through to the keeper. Rishabh Pant makes no mistake behind. He flies to his left and takes a brillaint catch tumbling over. Keegan Petersen walks out to bat at No.3 2/1
|
|||||
Aiden Markram | 13 | 34 | 3 | 0 | 38.23 |
b Mohammed Shami
11.5 OUT! TIMBER! Markram has to walk back courtesy a beauty from Shami. Almost unplayable. This lands on middle and then moves away. Markram is squared up as he tries to block. He does nothing wrong but try to play the original trajectory of the ball. The ball moves enough to beat the outside edge and hit the off pole. 30/3
|
|||||
Keegan Petersen | 15 | 22 | 3 | 0 | 68.18 |
b Mohammed Shami
7.3 OUT! TIMBER! Shami strikes and India are rewarded immediately after the break. Excellent delivery. Length and outside off. This one jags back in. Keegan goes searching for the ball. He prods forward and tries to play it ahead of his body. The ball sneaks through the gap between bat and pad and hits the stumps. South Africa in trouble now. Replays actually showed there was an inside edge onto the stumps. 25/2

Rassie van der Dussen | 3 | 18 | 0 | 0 | 16.66 |
c Ajinkya Rahane b Mohammed Siraj
12.5 OUT! EDGED AND TAKEN! This time it has carried and Siraj has got Rassie. India all over South Africa now. This is a length ball well outside off, Rassie could have left it but pushes at it with hard hands. It goes off the outside edge and Rahane at gully takes a good low catch. 32/4
|
|||||
Temba Bavuma | 52 | 103 | 10 | 0 | 50.48 |
c Rishabh Pant b Mohammed Shami
46.4 OUT! Edged and taken! The indecisiveness costs Bavuma. Shami has another one. What a spell this is from him. The last recognised batter is out of here for the hosts. This is a length ball outside off. Bavuma is not sure whether this will tail back in or no. He looks to defend. This one goes straight on. He realises he could leave it and tries to do so half heatedly. Too late as the ball kisses the outside edge and Pant does the rest. 144/7
|
|||||
Quinton de Kock Wk | 34 | 63 | 3 | 1 | 53.96 |
b Shardul Thakur
34.1 OUT! DRAGS IT ON! Thakur, who has the knack of picking wickets has done it for India! Gets the big wicket of de Kock. Vital breakthrough as this partnership was looking good. Poor shot form de Kock and he knows it. He just ended up doing nothing there. It is a harmless ball outside off. De Kock hangs his bat out, half-heartedly. It takes the inside edge and then crashes onto the stumps. Half the side back in the hut for South Africa. They still trail by another 223. 104/5
|
|||||
Wiaan Mulder | 12 | 33 | 2 | 0 | 36.36 |
c Rishabh Pant b Mohammed Shami
43 OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! Shami strikes! A fuller delivery outside off. Mulder goes for a big booming drive but the ball catches the outside edge of his blade. It goes back to Pant behind the stumps and he takes an easy catch.South Africa lose their sixth wicket. Mohammed Shami has the knack of breaking partnerships when needed and he has done that once again. Mulder held his ground there, he wasn’t ready to go, waited for the umpire to raise his finger which he eventually did and then walked off. Also, the umpire did not raise his finger because don't think anyone appealed. The Indians just celebrated. The umpire will give his verdict only if someone asks, right? Guess someone did appeal later and that is why, the umpire raised his finger and eventually, Mulder walked off. There was also a slight eye contact between the two umpires on the legality of the catch but the square leg umpire was sure that Pant had taken it cleanly. 133/6
|
|||||
Marco Jansen | 19 | 42 | 3 | 0 | 45.23 |
lbw b Shardul Thakur
57 OUT! LBW! There comes the wicket India were searching for a while. And it is once again, Shardul Thakur - the man with the golden arm that gets the breakthrough. Bowls a good-length ball, on middle, angling in. Marco Jansen shuffles across and looks to block it out. He misses though and gets struck on the back pad. Shardul Thakur appeals and the umpire agrees. Marco Jansen opts for a review. UltraEdge shows no bat involved. Ball Tracking shows that wickets hitting were umpire's call. So the original decision will stay and Marco Jansen will have to walk back to the pavilion after adding some valuable runs. When Jansen had arrived at the crease and was facing Ashwin, someone had asked Pant - 'KAISA KHELTA HAI?' Meaning, 'How does he play?' Remember, Jansen has represented Mumbai in the Indian T20 League. The reply from Pant was, 'THEEKTHAAK KHELTA HAI'. Meaning, 'He plays okay'. Well, this innings has certainly been more than okay and if the weather forecast which suggests poor weather on Thursday does come true, this knock, which has consumed valuable time, could come to the fore, if the Proteas manage to save this Test. 181/8
|
|||||
Kagiso Rabada | 25 | 45 | 3 | 1 | 55.55 |
c Rishabh Pant b Mohammed Shami
61.5 OUT! Edged and taken! Shami has his fifth and also picks up his 200th Test wicket as well. Points to the heavens to thank the almighty. Exceptional from the pacer. He has been relentless. Again, kept hitting it on a length and around off. Hoping for the ball to its bit. This time it does as it holds its line. Too good for a tail-ender. Rabada looks to defend but it kisses the outside edge and Pant does the rest. India just the one wicket away from bowling South Africa out. Trail still well above 100. This is what we call patient bowling! After the ball has become soft, there’s not a lot on offer. Shami though has just kept hitting the right lines and lengths, giving nothing away and waiting for the batter to make a mistake and he has been rewarded. 193/9
|
|||||
Keshav Maharaj | 12 | 19 | 3 | 0 | 63.15 |
c Ajinkya Rahane b Jasprit Bumrah
62.3 OUT! TAKEN! Smart captaincy from Virat Kohli. There was a fielder stationed at deep backward point and the plan was to bowl short and that's exactly what Bumrah did. Bowls a short-of-a-length delivery, on middle. Keshav Maharaj makes room for himself and flashes hard. The ball goes off the outside edge to deep backward point where Rahane pouches it comfortably to end South Africa's innings. South Africa are bundled out for 197. 197/10

KL Rahul | 23 | 74 | 4 | 0 | 31.08 |
c Dean Elgar b Lungi Ngidi
22.3 OUT! EDGED AND TAKEN! Rahul falls, that is a loose, loose stroke! He is gutted with himself and rightly so. Very uncharacteristic off him. But maybe him not able to score as freely as he usually does in this innings frustrated him or even the blow earlier on got him rattled. He senses a scoring opportunity here, his eyes probably lit up as he saw width on offer outside off. Rahul slashes but does not do it convincingly. It goes off the outside edge to the man at first slip. Elgar takes an easy catch. This has been really good from South Africa so far. Need to keep going. 54/3
|
|||||
Mayank Agarwal | 4 | 14 | 1 | 0 | 28.57 |
c Quinton de Kock b Marco Jansen
5.1 OUT! TAKEN! De kock certainly had no problems in taking that and Jansen strikes on his first ball. Just what South Africa needed, a widket before Stumps. It is a good length delivery, angling away from off. Agarwal feels for it away from the body. This goes off the outside edge and de Kock takes it. Agarwal is once again found wanting to a ball outside off. He jabs at the delivery which is always risky especially in places like South Africa and England. He got away with a couple earlier on but this time the edge is found. The South Africans are elated. Still time for another and there will be a new kind of energy in this ending phase of Day 3 in the South Africans. Also, he’ll be on a hat-trick. He got the last wicket in the first innings and now strikes on the very first ball. 12/1

|||||
Shardul Thakur | 10 | 26 | 1 | 1 | 38.46 |
c Wiaan Mulder b Kagiso Rabada
12.5 OUT! EDGED AND TAKEN! Rabada finally gets the breakthrough! The nightwatchman walks back. Early wicket for South Africa. Rabda has been a lot better, he has made the batter play a lot more and now gets the reward. It is a good length delivery on off, takes off after landing. Thakur looks to defend, it goes more off the higher part of the outside edge and to the third slip fielder. Wiaan Mulder takes it nicely. 34/2
|
|||||
Cheteshwar Pujara | 16 | 64 | 3 | 0 | 25 |
c Quinton de Kock b Lungi Ngidi
37.1 OUT! India have lost their fifth wicket now! And it is Lungi Ngidi who strikes and sends back Cheteshwar Pujara. He would be disappointed with that dismissal. Lungi Ngidi serves a fuller ball, down the leg side. Cheteshwar Pujara tries to flick but it goes off the inner half. Quinton de Kock makes no mistake and takes it comfortably. Pujara might score a lot of runs of the flick shot but this time he falls. He got off to a start but falls in a very soft manner. Much-needed wicket as the game was slipping away from South Africa. 109/5
|
|||||
Virat Kohli C | 18 | 32 | 4 | 0 | 56.25 |
c Quinton de Kock b Marco Jansen
32.1 OUT! EDGED AND TAKEN! Jansen gets the Indian skipper and this is one wicket he will remember for a long, long time! He is delighted and that is the start South Africa would have wanted after the break. Quite a strange shot though, it is the first ball after a break and to play that shot, really raises questions about what Kohli was thinking. Maybe India had come out with the intent of upping the ante, has backfired though. This is full and quite wide outside off, there to be driven. Kohli goes for it but it finds the outside edge and de Kock does the rest. India are effectively 209 for 4 but South Africa now have a sniff. Also, this is quite similar to the way he gout out in the first innings. Not learning from his mistake is the Indian skipper. 79/4
|
|||||
Ajinkya Rahane | 20 | 23 | 3 | 1 | 86.95 |
c Rassie van der Dussen b Marco Jansen
38.5 OUT! TAKEN! India have started to tumble here! Marco Jansen picks up yet another wicket and sends Ajinkya Rahane back to the hut now. A short ball, around middle. Ajinkya Rahane goes for the pull shot and gets a big top edge to Rassie van der Dussen at deep square leg. An unnecessary shot by Ajinkya Rahane here, that was not needed. He was looking in good touch but has given it away. India are now 6 down. 111/6
|
|||||
Rishabh Pant Wk | 34 | 34 | 6 | 0 | 100 |
c Lungi Ngidi b Kagiso Rabada
47.3 OUT! CAUGHT! Rishabh Pant departs and this is a big wicket for South Africa as he was adding some valuable runs and that too in quick time. He looks to continue his agressive approach. Steps down the track again. Rabada was probably expecting that and surprises him with back-to-back bumpers. This one has extra bounce in it and is also a tad wide outside off. Pant initially looks to pull but then tries to bail out as he realises he won't be getting on top of the bounce. It goes off the toe-end towards mid on. Ngidi takes an easy catch by moving to his left. A good innings by Pant. He has surely done his job. 166/8
|
|||||
Ravichandran Ashwin | 14 | 17 | 2 | 0 | 82.35 |
c Keegan Petersen b Kagiso Rabada
45.1 OUT! TAKEN! This time Ashwin does not survive the review! It also hit the handle of the bat before hitting the arm guard. Ashwin has to walk back and Rabada gets another wicket. A nasty short one and on middle, this one gets big on Ashwin. He looks to fend it away. It goes off something towards point where Keegan takes it. The finger is raised but Ashwin reviews again. Replays show that there is small spike before the ball hits the arm guard. The umpire feels it has hit the handle and then lobbed to the man at point. The original decision stays. Ashwin is taken by surprise when the umpire yet again signaled out. He was quite confident it hit the arm guard. Also, that was not a short delivery, it was a back of a length ball which just took off. 146/7

Mohammed Shami | 1 | 12 | 0 | 0 | 8.33 |
c Wiaan Mulder b Kagiso Rabada
49.2 OUT! CAUGHT! Another one goes down and Rabada gets his fourth wicket. Back of a length, on middle. Shami looks to work it away towards the on side but the ball catches the outside edge of his blade and flies towards third slip. Wiaan Mulder there takes a fine catch and India lose their ninth wicket. The lead is healthy for India but South Africa are chipping in with wickets here. 169/9

50.3 OUT! BOWLED! It's all over! Marco Jansen bowls this on a length, on middle. Mohammed Siraj backs away again and looks to cut it but misses it altogether. The ball shatters the stumps and Jansen gets his fourth wicket of the innings. This has been a good fightback by South Africa but the lead for India is 304 and that is a formidable score on this pitch. India finish with 174 in this second innings and South Africa need 305 to win this game now. 174/10

1.3 OUT! BOWLED! Shami continues to test Aiden Markram by bowling in that channel around off and gets rewarded with a wicket off his third ball. A good-length delivery around off. Aiden Markram tries to leave it but is late on that decision. The ball catches the inside edge of his blade and shatters the stumps. It is Shami again who produces the wicket. This is top quality bowling. India draw first blood! 1/1

Dean Elgar C | 77 | 156 | 12 | 0 | 49.35 |
lbw b Jasprit Bumrah
50.5 OUT! LBW! There's the breakthrough! India desperately needed the wicket of Dean Elgar and they have got it. So often we have seen that whenever India are in search for a wicket, Jasprit Bumrah steps up and gets one for his team. Yesterday, got the wicket of the nightwatchman, Keshav Maharaj at the stroke of Stumps and now removes the man who was holding the key for South Africa. Coming to the ball, it was a good-length ball, on middle, angling in. Dean Elgar shuffles across a bit and looks to clip it on the leg side. But he misses and gets rapped on the pads. Jasprit Bumrah and Co. appeal strongly and the umpire raises his finger. Dean Elgar opts for a review though. UltraEdge shows that there was no bat involved. Ball Tracker shows that the ball was pitching outside off, impact was in line and it was hitting the stumps. Jasprit Bumrah has got the better of Dean Elgar in both the innings and his resilience comes to an end. India have got the opening now. 130/5

Keegan Petersen | 17 | 36 | 3 | 0 | 47.22 |
c Rishabh Pant b Mohammed Siraj
14.1 OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! Mohammed Siraj strikes and the partnership is finally broken. A full delivery on off, bit of away swing on that. Keegan Petersen looks to drive it towards the on side but the ball finds the outside edge of his blade. It goes back to Pant and he takes a brilliant catch diving to his right. India have got the breakthrough and they will be looking to capitalise on it now. Keegan Petersen will be disappointed. He had done all the hard work till now but has to go back after getting set. 34/2

Rassie van der Dussen | 11 | 65 | 1 | 0 | 16.92 |
b Jasprit Bumrah
36.4 OUT! BOWLED! Jasprit Bumrah is the man for India. He strikes yet again when the team needed it the most. A good-length delivery around off. Rassie van der Dussen decides to play safe and tries to leave it. But the ball nips in sharply to shatter his off-stump. A big wicket for India and this is the breakthrough they needed. Rassie fought hard till he was there but his team needed him to stay longer. Not sure though why Rassie left that. Bumrah, with his unusual style of bowling normally gets the ball to come back in. This wasn’t far enough to leave, maybe he thought it would be going away. Big mistake by Rassie. India surely have time for another wicket. Nervous period for South Africa now. 74/3

Keshav Maharaj | 8 | 19 | 1 | 0 | 42.10 |
b Jasprit Bumrah
40.5 OUT! TIMBER! BOOM BOOM BUMRAH! Just when the nightwatchman was looking solid, Jasprit Bumrah finds a way to get rid of him. What a bowler. Outsanding stuff. Bowls a toe-crushing yorker, on leg, angling in from outside off. Keshav Maharaj couldn't do anything there. He clears his front leg and tries to squeeze it out but the ball was too quick. Before he could bring his bat down, the ball sneaks and rattles the stumps behind. The nightwatchman departs. THAT WILL BE STUMPS ON DAY 4! 94/4

b Mohammed Siraj
59.3 OUT! CHOPS IT ON! This was on the cards. This was so on the cards. If you remember Siraj's last over, just visualize 57.2 and 57.3. De Kock could have been dismissed on either ball, once getting an inside edge onto his pad and once, being beaten on the inside edge. In fact, we could hear Kohli saying there it is just a matter of time that is because de Kock has played 18 balls but has looked a little shaky. Well, it has not taken long at all. De Kock looked fidgety all this while, he was looking to play way too many shots and in the end picks the wrong ball to play the wrong shot yet again and falls. Also, this is almost a carbon copy of the way he got out in the first innings. Once again de Kock looks to cut a ball outside off. It is too close to play that shot. He gets an underedge and it crashes into the stumps. Huge wicket as de Kock could have really taken the game away from India. Poor from de Kock though. He could have played with a lot more responsibility. India just 4 wickets away now. 161/6

Wiaan Mulder | 1 | 3 | 0 | 0 | 33.33 |
c Rishabh Pant b Mohammed Shami
60.2 OUT! EDGED AND TAKEN! Shami comes on and Shami strikes! Mulder falls for just the one run. India just the three wickets away now. Shami lands it on a length, this pitches and then moves away slightly. Mulder lunges and tries to block. He actually ends up pushing at it away from the body. A faint edge and Pant does the rest. India can surely sense a win before Lunch here. 164/7

Marco Jansen | 13 | 14 | 3 | 0 | 92.85 |
c Rishabh Pant b Mohammed Shami
66.5 OUT! TAKEN! Shami strikes right after Lunch and Marco Jansen's stay ends! That is a peach of a delivery to any batter let alone a tailender. Length ball, just outside off. Jansen is tentative in his push forward to block it but gets the outside edge. Pant dives to his right and takes the catch. A brilliant start for India post Lunch and a couple of wicket-taking deliveries now will give them a 1-0 lead in the series! 190/8

Kagiso Rabada | 4 | 0 | 0 | 0 | |
c Mohammed Shami b Ravichandran Ashwin
67.5 OUT! TAKEN! 9 down now South Africa! Well bowled by Ashwin. He tosses it nicely, wide outside off. Rabada looks to drive but does so with his hands reaching out. The ball takes the outside edge and loops up towards point. Mohammed Shami takes an easy catch. 191/9

Lungi Ngidi | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | |
c Cheteshwar Pujara b Ravichandran Ashwin
68 OUT! TAKEN! All over! Victory for India in Centurion! Flatter and on middle. Ngidi looks to block it with hard hands and gets the inside edge. The ball goes straight to leg slip and Cheteshwar Pujara takes it with ease! Centurion has been conquered by India as they win by 113 runs! 191/10
