Right then, that wraps up our coverage of the first Test - a match with its fair share of ebb and flow, not necessarily in momentum between the two teams, but in the intrigue each day's play brought. This is just the beginning of what promises to be a crackerjack five-match series. The excitement will ramp up even further as we head to Adelaide for the second Test, a pink-ball Day-Night contest that promises its own set of challenges. The second Test begins on Friday, 6th December, with the first ball to be bowled at 4 am GMT (9.30 am IST). As always, our build-up will start much earlier. Until then, take care and goodbye!
The Indian skipper, Jasprit Bumrah is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his superb showing with the ball. He says that he is happy with the way the team responded after being put under pressure in the first innings. Shares that he played here in 2018 and knew that the wicket here is a little soft early on and it gets quicker as the game progresses. Adds that this deck was not as spicy as they were expecting. Mentions that the talk was about having faith in one's ability and even if you do not have the experience, you can do something special. Feels that this was the best knock of Yashasvi Jaiswal's career and how he adapted to the demands of the situation. When asked about Virat Kohli, he replies that it did not look like Kohli was out of form looking at how he was batting in the nets.
The captain of Australia, Pat Cummins says that it is very disappointing and that they will take a couple of day's rest and then get back to the preps for the Adelaide Test. Adds that they didn't really give themselves a chance in all the facets. Further believes that they should have done well on the first day with the bat. Says that it's a long summer ahead and the sample size is very small. Mentions tthere's a lot of experience out there in the dressing room and says they very well know how to come back. Ends by saying they will have a detailed conversation about where things went wrong and come stronger and more prepared for Adelaide.
Time for the presentation ceremony...
Head continued to impose himself on the Indian attack, while Marsh, who had looked shaky before the Lunch break, also found his footing. As he has often done, Bumrah broke through on his return to the attack by removing Head. When Marsh dragged one back onto the stumps off Nitish Kumar Reddy's bowling, one end was opened for the tourists, and it was only a matter of time before they sealed the deal. This 295-run win marks India's biggest win in Australia in terms of runs, as they clinch a memorable victory.
Earlier on Day 4, Australia were rocked early with the dismissal of Usman Khawaja. Steven Smith and Travis Head then stepped up, with Smith making a conscious adjustment to not shuffle across his stumps. The indifferent bounce troubled both, and while Head started with caution, he gained confidence as the innings progressed, beginning to unleash his shots. Smith was undone by a beauty from Siraj, but Head held firm and stitched together another solid stand with the local boy, Mitchell Marsh.
On Day 3, centuries from Yashasvi Jaiswal and Virat Kohli helped India extend their advantage. Jaiswal became only the third Indian to score a century in his first Test in Australia. After a mini-collapse saw India lose 3 wickets for 8 runs to be reduced to 322/5, Kohli's 30th Test century, along with a cameo from Nitish Kumar Reddy, pushed India to a commanding 533-run lead before declaring. After grinding them out in the field for 134.3 overs, India inflicted further misery on Australia, reducing them to 12/3 by the close of play.
By Day 2, the greenish tinge on the surface had faded, revealing a more brownish hue. The frenetic action of Day 1 gave way to a steadier contest, with just three wickets falling across the day. Mitchell Starc displayed admirable resilience with the bat, helping Australia cut the deficit to 46 runs. Contrary to expectations, the pitch eased out instead of deteriorating, and KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal capitalized on the improved conditions. The duo batted with authority, taking India to a dominant position by stumps, leading by 218 runs with all 10 wickets intact.
Let’s take a look back at how we arrived at this point in the first Test. It all began with a gripping opening day that saw 17 wickets tumble, all claimed by the seamers. India, opting to bat first on a lively green pitch, were bowled out for a mere 150. Australia’s pacers, spearheaded by Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood, exploited the conditions brilliantly to rattle the visitors. When it was Australia’s turn to bat, the Indian pacers hit back with equal venom. Jasprit Bumrah’s fiery spells, combined with impactful contributions from Mohammed Siraj and debutant Harshit Rana, had Australia reeling. By stumps, the hosts were in deep trouble, precariously placed at 67/7.
An emphatic win for India to take a 1-0 lead in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy! After being bowled out for just 150 in the first innings, trouble loomed large, and not many would have imagined India winning the game, let alone by a massive margin of 295 runs. This win propels India to the top of the 2023-25 World Test Championship standings, dethroning Australia. As for Australia, being humbled at home in such a manner is a rare occurrence, especially at the Perth Stadium, where they had an impeccable record, winning all four of their previous Tests at this venue.

Harshit Rana To Alex Carey OUT!
OUT! BOWLED'EM! INDIA WIN A FAMOUS TEST IN PERTH! A victory which will be remembered for a long, long time! Harshit Rana stays around the stumps and serves the slower ball at 109.9 kph that lands on a fuller length at off, Alex Carey is stuck inside the crease and goes through to push it to the off-side, anticipating the ball to come quicker at him. He ends up playing inside the line and goes through the shot a bit early. The ball flirts past the outside edge to clatter into the sticks. India halt Australia's unbeaten winning streak at the Optus Stadium in Perth. Also, this is the largest win for the tourists in terms of the run margin in Australia.

A confident appeal for LBW from Rana but the umpire shakes his head in denial! Rana is absolutely pleading with the umpire and turns around to have a chat with his teammates. Virat Kohli from slips asks the skipper to take the review and Jasprit Bumrah signals 'T' to send it upstairs. Coming to the ball, Harshit steams in from around the wickets and lands it on a hard length, skidding through the deck and staying a tad bit low on the bounce. Alex Carey is squared up and tries to block it in front but plays inside the line. Gets rapped on the back thigh pad. UltraEdge shows nothing but Ball Tracking confirms the ball passing just over the stumps. NOT OUT!

OUT! CLEANED HIM UP! Two in the over for Sundar, either side of the Tea break! Sundar serves it on a nagging length, on the off-stump line, Lyon gets himself on the front foot and plays for the turn but there is no turn on offer. This goes straight on and zips past the outside edge of Lyon's vertical bat. It goes through to clatter the off pole. Sundar punches the air in delight. A duck for Lyon. ... DAY 4, SESSION 3 ...
After that, Alex Carey and Mitchell Starc batted without much trouble, and it seemed like the duo would see off the session without further casualties. However, Jurel plucked one out of thin air to send Starc packing at the stroke of Tea break. The writing is on the wall for Australia, and at this stage, it's about taking whatever positives they can, despite the inevitable loss. On a personal level, Carey will be hoping to spend as much time as possible at the crease and wear down the Indian bowlers. Do join us back in a bit for the start of the third session, which, in all likelihood, will be the final session of the Test.
Well, a spectacular grab from Dhruv Jurel on what turned out to be the final ball of the session has brought India ever closer to sealing a famous win here in Perth. Earlier in the session, Travis Head picked up where he left off before the Lunch break, continuing to take his chances. At the other end, Mitchell Marsh who had looked shaky earlier, grew in confidence as the duo built a solid partnership. The 82-run stand was broken by Bumrah, with Head falling for 89. Shortly after, Nitish Kumar Reddy made Marsh his first Test victim, as the local boy fell just short of his fifty, dismissed for 47.

Washington Sundar To Mitchell Starc OUT!
OUT! TAKEN! What a sharp catch by Dhruv Jurel at short leg! Washington Sundar stays around the stumps and slows down the pace, giving some flight on it. Keeps the line of attack on the stumps and the length is full. Mitchell Starc prods forward and brings his bat ahead of the pads to clip it away. But he is a bit early into the shot and ends up lobbing it towards the right of short leg where Jurel shows quick reflexes. He stays in his squatting position but stretches his right hand out, almost thrusting it over his head, and plucks it out of thin air. Starc departs on 12 (35). Sundar gets his first wicket and Australia are 227/8 now. And that will be TEA ON DAY 4!

Drinks! We have seen more intent from the Aussie batters in this session. But just when the Travis Head-Mitchell Marsh alliance had begun to frustrate the Indian bowlers, Jasprit Bumrah came back to the rescue and got the better of the dangerous southpaw who played a brisk hand of 89 runs. As things stand, India need 4 wickets to win and will look to break this last recognized batting pair as quickly as possible. Mitchell Marsh has looked rock-solid so far as well and is inching towards his half-century and has just went past 1000 runs in Tests on the Australian soil.

Starts from around the wicket and angles in a full delivery, on off, Head plays it with a straight bat to the right of the bowler.
Welcome back for the post-Lunch session! The two umpires walk out to the middle. The Indian team is in a huddle before spreading out onto the field. Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh make their way out to the middle to resume their partnership for Australia. It will be Harshit Rana (6-1-27-0) to kick off the proceedings with the ball for India. And, away we go...
... DAY 4, SESSION 2 ...
Well then, another session has flown by in this West Test. Australia just about managed to hang in there but still have a mountain to climb. On the other hand, the tourists will be determined to not let things slide away from here and look to bundle the hosts towards the end of the second session. While Australia would be keen to stretch the game into the fifth day, showing they have got grit. The post-Lunch session begins soon and we will be back in a bit. Stay tuned.
Though Indian seamers kept probing persistently, with Washington Sundar brought in to exploit the roughs and cracks, the first hour was dominated by Australia's resilient duo. Smith, showing marked improvement in his footwork, looked more assured at the crease, only to see his innings cut short upon the change in bowling brought in. Travis Head then took center stage, unfurling a series of sublime strokes. Runs began to flow freely once the South Australian found his rhythm and also notched a brisk half-century towards the end of the session.
It has been a sedate day as compared to the action-packed first three days. Australia, with a huge mountain to climb, lost Usman Khawaja pretty early to Siraj as Australia slipped down further to 17/4. The pitch began to further deteriorate as the cracks widened, with unpredictable bounce making batting a challenging affair. Yet Smith and Head showcased remarkable resilience, dug deep into their reserves, and built a solid 62-run stand.
LUNCH, DAY 4 - Session Summary - 25.4 overs, 92 runs, 2 wickets. Australia would be very happy to see through the morning session after what unfolded late on Day 3. The key highlights of the session have been Travis Head's brisk fifty and Mohammed Siraj's interrogating spell of bowling.

The uneven bounce has kept both Steven Smith and Travis Head on their toes, but the pair have shown grit to hang in there after Usman Khawaja's early dismissal in just the second over of the day. On a pitch that’s starting to play tricks, India’s bowlers will need to remain patient, stick to their basics, and let the conditions do the talking rather than overcomplicating their approach.

A confident appeal for LBW from Rana but the umpire shakes his head in denial! This looks really close and after a long discussion, Jasprit Bumrah signals the 'T' and challenges the on-field decision. Rana gets the ball to angle into the batter, it lands on a good length and keeps low as it jags back in very sharply. Steven Smith shuffles across and is trapped in front as he plays with a straight bat to block it out, but plays over the line and it hits his front pad. Nothing on UltraEdge and the Ball Tracking shows that it is just sliding down the leg stump. NOT OUT. India lose their review!

Jasprit Bumrah To Steven Smith
A huge, huge appeal for LBW first up! But the umpire shakes his head in denial. While the Indian players were discussing whether to review it, the on-field umpire signals for a NO BALL. Coming to the ball, Bumrah steams in from over the stumps and angles it into the stumps, on a length. Steven Smith covers his stumps and plays all over the line of the ball and gets rapped on the pad. Bumrah has overstepped.
All in readiness for the action to commence on Day 4. India are in a huddle near the ropes before striding out to the centre. Usman Khawaja is joined by Steven Smith out in the middle. Jasprit Bumrah will complete his over. Bumrah to Smith first up. Here we go!
PITCH REPORT - Wasim Akram and Ravi Shastri are near the deck. Wasim starts by highlighting a few visible cracks near the end from which Bumrah is operating. He mentions that the cooler weather today will ease the workload for India's bowlers, even if they have to spend the entire day in the field. Shastri points out that with these cracks, batters must play straight and avoid the risk of playing across the line. He also predicts that Washington Sundar could become a key factor later, thanks to the rough patches created by the bowlers' footmarks.
Now with Day 4 on the cards, Australia find themselves in unfamiliar territory and their 100 per cent winning record at the Optus is in jeopardy. The writing appears pretty much on the wall for them now. A deteriorating pitch expected to offer considerable seam movement, could make life even more difficult for the struggling hosts. It is just about how long they can extend the inevitable against Bumrah and Co. But sure, this Aussie batting unit won't go out without a fight. Stay tuned as the first delivery is coming your way soon.
Australia's woes deepened as their bowling unit largely looked rhythmless, barring those few close calls. And also, skipper Cummins failed to stamp his authority with the ball, which indeed is a sight of rarity especially on Aussie soil. Nathan Lyon did get some bite off the deck but it was too little and too late by then. Also, their top order frailties got exposed again as they collapsed to 12/3 while chasing a daunting 534.
Just when you thought this Perth pitch couldn't offer more drama, the plot thickened towards the climax of Day 3. The surface that had been a batter's dream for six sessions finally began to bare its teeth - cracks widening and rough patches darkening coupled with uneven variable bounce as well. Even as Hazlewood and Starc threatened to trigger a collapse, with beating edges at several occasions, the towering 161 from Jaiswal and a rollicking partnership between Kohli and Sundar stood firm with the former finally scoring his 81st international ton, and the first in this calendar year.
India have pulled off something really extraordinary here in Australia's home conditions and are on the cusp of executing the unthinkable. After being knocked over for 150, they've turned the tables in spectacular fashion, first by skittling the mighty Aussies for a shocking 104, then by putting on a batting masterclass that stretched over two grueling days. The Indian batters made the Australian attack sweat and tire through 134 overs, completely transforming a match that began with seamer dominance. It's been a stunning display of resilience and skill, proving once again why Test cricket is the ultimate game of ebbs and flows.
Monday blues, anyone? Though the calendars are filled with meetings - from early morning in India to brunch in Australia - the real notifications we're all sneaking peeks at are those cricket updates. The spreadsheets might be open, but our hearts are at the cricket grounds! Hello and welcome to everyone joining us for the coverage of Day 4 of the first Test of this Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024/25. It has been a sure-shot crackerjack of a contest so far at the Optus Stadium of Perth. Australia vs India - two cricketing powerhouses, a storied rivalry, one fortress and we are gradually approaching the climax of this inaugural Test.
... DAY 4, SESSION 1 ...
Right then, three days of this Perth Test are in the books, and judging by Australia's struggles with the bat, a four-day finish seems likely unless they pull off an extraordinary batting effort to push the game into the fifth and final day. You wouldn’t want to miss any of the action on Day 4. The first ball will be bowled at 2.20 am GMT (7.50 am IST), but as always, you can join us early for the build-up. For now, feel free to switch tabs and catch the action from the first ODI between Zimbabwe and Pakistan in Bulawayo. Cheers!
After a grueling day in the field, just when it seemed things couldn't get any worse for the hosts, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj piled on the misery with a fiery spell late in the day. Bumrah accounted for Nathan McSweeney and Marnus Labuschagne, while Pat Cummins who came in as a night-watchman, was undone by Siraj. With two days still left in the Test, the Aussies are staring down the barrel. What makes their task with the bat even more daunting is the pitch's behavior in the latter half of Day 3. It began to show signs of uneven bounce, and Nathan Lyon extracted sharp turn from the rough - conditions that were absent on a relatively quiet Day 2.
With the deck showing no signs of wear, Jaiswal and Devdutt Padikkal added to Australia's woes, leaving the visitors waiting for the second new ball. Once available, Australia did not start that well, but Josh Hazlewood struck immediately after the Lunch break to remove Padikkal. From 313/2, Jaiswal's dismissal triggered a mini-collapse, with India slipping to 321/5 to lift the Aussie spirits. Virat Kohli held firm and stitched partnerships first with Washington Sundar and then with Nitish Kumar Reddy to extend the lead. His partnership with Nitish gave the final push India needed for their declaration and as Kohli upped the ante, it also brought up his 30th Test ton. The tourists declared at 487/6, setting Australia a target of 534 runs.
An ideal end to the day for India, and for two days in a row, they couldn't have asked for a better day at the office. Dominating first with the bat and then with the ball, the tourists have heaped misery on Australia. By the close of play on the 'Moving Day', the Test has moved well beyond the reach of the hosts, leaving them with an uphill battle. Earlier, a new dawn brought no respite for Australia as Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul pressed to build the 218-run lead. The lateral movement remained negligible, and Jaiswal reached his 4th Test century in the first session. After going wicketless for two sessions on Day 2, Australia finally broke through on Day 3 when Mitchell Starc dismissed Rahul.

Jasprit Bumrah To Marnus Labuschagne OUT!
OUT! LBW! A huge confident appeal for LBW and Chris Gaffaney raises his finger! Indian players are celebrating but Marnus Labuschagne opts for a review after chatting with Usman Khawaja. Coming to the delivery, Jasprit Bumrah uses the angle and bowls it from a bit wide of the crease, angling into the right-hander. It lands and stays a tad bit low on the bounce and skids through very quickly off the deck. Marnus Labuschagne misjudges the nip-backer and tries to leave it by hanging his bat in the air. Gets pinged right on his front pad. Ball Tracking comes up and shows three reds. The impact does not matter as no shot was offered by Labuschagne. The projection then shows that the ball could have smashed the top of the off stump. OUT it is and Australia slip further on 12/3. And with that, it is STUMPS ON DAY 3!

Mohammed Siraj To Pat Cummins OUT!
OUT! EDGED AND TAKEN! Australia's nightwatchman project does no good as Cummins makes his way to the dugout now. Siraj pitches it right in front of the off-stump, gets it to nip away a tad bit off the deck. Pat Cummins looks to defend but fails to read the deviation and hence a healthy outside edge is found. It goes off the bat, flat and low towards the second slip where Virat Kohli bends low on his knees and takes a sharp catch to his left. Australia are reeling at 9/2.

Jasprit Bumrah To Nathan McSweeney OUT!
OUT! LBW! TRAPPED IN FRONT! A huge appeal for LBW, and given out instantly! Jasprit Bumrah strikes in his very first over. He steams in from over the stumps, bowls it from wide of the crease and angles it into the batter. On a length, on the stumps. This one lands and stays low on the bounce and skids through quickly off the surface. Nathan McSweeney is caught off-guard due to the low bounce and brings his bat ahead but the ball sneaks under the bat ping him on the front pad. Nathan McSweeney has a brief chat with Khawaja and keeps walking as it is plumb in front. McSweeney walks off the field without troubling the scorers.
