Jerusalem:

An Indian-born Israeli cricket umpire, Naor Gudker, was honoured by Israel's Sports Authority for his outstanding contribution to the game in Jerusalem.

Gudker was given the award by Minister of Science, Culture and Sport Rajeb Majdale in the "Match Officials of the Decade, non-Olympic sports" category for serving as an umpire in European Cricket Council (ECC) panel with distinction.

Gudker is also the Chief Executive Officer of Israel Cricket Association (ICA) and has supervised ECC games in countries like Malaysia, England, Ireland, Holland, Italy, Cyprus and Germany.

"I feel honoured at the recognition bestowed on me but as the CEO of ICA my goal is to bring Israeli cricket to the forefront and provide international exposure to the youth. The ongoing tour of India A team has given a big boost to our efforts to attract young talent in the country," Gudker told PTI.

Gudker's parents migrated to Israel in 1963 from Mumbai when he was six but he is still fluent in Marathi and Hindi, which he picked up here during the course of his interaction with people from the Indian community.

The ICA is an associate member of the ICC since 1974 and was a founding member of the ECC in 1996.

Israeli youngsters have been very successful in the under-13 and under-15 ECC championships with majority of the players in the team drawn from the Indian-Jewish community.

There are 18 teams in the ICA league with cricket being played throughout the year here.
