Premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah needs to wait for sometime for his ODI return after donning the blue jersey in the 2023 World Cup final against Australia in Ahmedabad. The 31-year-old is currently playing in the Test series against South Africa and has been accorded a rest as per his workload management plan.

As Jasprit Bumrah has been rested for the ODIs against South Africa, it will be a good opportunity for young pacer Arshdeep Singh to shine. Along with Arshdeep, India's squad features Harshit Rana and Prasidh Krishna as the specialist pacers. 

India’s pace department will be led by Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna, and all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy in the ODIs against South Africa. It is a relatively inexperienced fast bowling attack and will have its task cut out against the Proteas batters.

Axar Patel, who was a part of India’s recent white ball tour to Australia, was rested from the ODIs against the Proteas. The 31-year-old was also a part of the four-pronged spin attack that India fielded against South Africa in the Eden Gardens Test along with Kuldeep Yadav, Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja. Both Kuldeep and Sundar have been included in the one-day squad.

KL Rahul has been given the captaincy with the short-term goal of the South Africa series in mind, claimed a PTI report. "Rahul's captaincy is one off and should be seen in isolation. Rishabh (Pant) wasn't considered as he has played only one ODI game in the last one year. The selectors expect that Shubman Gill's neck injury will heal and he will be back against New Zealand (3 ODIs in January 2026)," a BCCI source told PTI on condition of anonymity.

After missing the Australia tour, Ravindra Jadeja returns to India’s ODI squad. The veteran all-rounder brings a wealth of experience with 204 matches in the format, scoring 2,806 runs at an average of 32.62, and claiming 231 wickets.

Once again, fans will witness the iconic duo of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in action for India. The two have already called time on their Test and T20I careers and now remain active only in the ODI format. While Rohit was the top scorer for India in the most recent ODI series against Australia, Kohli also impressed with an unbeaten 74 in the final match.

Ruturaj Gaikwad finished as the top run-scorer for India A in the three-match unofficial ODI series against South Africa A. He has earned a spot in India’s squad for the upcoming ODIs. However, he might miss out on playing time, with the management likely to prefer Yashasvi Jaiswal over him.

As per PTI, Rishabh Pant has been appointed deputy to KL Rahul. Pant last featured in an ODI for India in August 2024, against Sri Lanka in Colombo. While he continues to represent the side in Tests, he has been out of T20I action for over a year now.

A report from PTI on Saturday claimed that Shubman Gill's injury is not restricted to a neck spasm. He will require extensive rest, and the Indian team management does not want to risk rushing him back into action. Gill is currently in Mumbai for his treatment.

For the T20I series against the Proteas, almost all of the selection candidates are likely to be available for selection. It would be interesting to see if Hardik Pandya is included, with the seam-bowling all-rounder on rehab mode for a quad injury recovery at the BCCI CoE in Bengaluru.

A report has claimed that India's marquee pacer Jasprit Bumrah is set to be rested to manage his workload and Kuldeep Yadav expected to be on leave due to his wedding. In their absence, the likes of Harshit Rana, Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh, Axar Patel, Varun Chakravarthy and Washington Sundar will shape the bowling attack for the white-ball series.

“Yes, the selection meeting is today in Mumbai, after being initially presumed that it would happen in Guwahati. It is understood that other members are also travelling to Mumbai for it,” an IANS report quoted a source as saying.

KL Rahul remains one of the most controversy-free captaincy options for Team India for the ODI series against South Africa. Rahul has captained India 12 times in the format between 2022-23 but he lost the full-time captaincy race to Shubman Gill. However, he remains one of the most consistent players in the format. Hence, could be made the stand-in skipper for the series.

In all likeliness, the squad and its captain are expected to be announced today.

With continuity being an important factor, the Ajit Agakar-led selection committee is unlikely to change the India squad for the T20Is against South Africa.

The chances of Rohit Sharma taking up India's captaincy for the series aren't entirely ruled out. The former skipper, who led India to Champions Trophy and T20 World Cup triumphs, reportedly wanted to continue captaining the side before the BCCI informed him about the decision to go ahead with Shubman Gill. For a one-off series against South Africa, Rohit's return as skipper is still plausible. 

With the ODI series against South Africa set to start on November 30, there isn't much clarity on Virat Kohli's whereabouts at the moment. The India icon might be in London with his family, preparing for the 50-over assignment. He isn't likely to fly to India until the BCCI confirms the squad for the ODI series. 

As the likes of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli look to keep their ODI careers alive, there isn't a ray of doubt that the assignment against South Africa will be crucial to their hopes. There isn't going to be an ODI series after the Proteas series concludes for a while. The two have to make it count at all costs. 

Another day went by as the wait for the BCCI selection committee to announce India's ODI and T20I squads for the South Africa series continues. The captaincy conundrum seems to be taking more time than expected, with the Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel contemplating different options for the leadership role. 

With Shubman Gill likely to miss out on the ODI assignment, and Shreyas Iyer out due to a long-term injury, the selectors have to find a new face for the leadership role.

India batter KL Rahul is likely to lead the team in the upcoming three-match ODIs against South Africa, starting November 30, said an ANI report quoting a BCCI source.

Notably, Shreyas Iyer, who was appointed Gill's deputy in the ODI format for the recently-concluded Australia series in October, is also out of action due to an injury.

Shubman Gill is all set to miss the upcoming three match ODI series against South Africa as his neck injury is likely to take more time to heal, said a PTI report, quoting BCCI sources. The names of wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant and senior player KL Rahul could be considered for stop-gap captaincy although veteran Rohit Sharma is also in the squad, it added.

The report further said that Gill's injury isn't exactly restricted to neck spasm. He would require extensive rest and hence Indian team management wouldn't want to risk rushing him back to action.

In case Shubman Gill misses out on the ODI series against South Africa, India will be interested in roping in Ruturaj Gaikwad. The batter turned out to be the top scorer with 210 runs in the recently concluded three-match series of unofficial ODIs against South Africa A. Despite that, Gaikwad might fail to find a place in India's playing XI, as the team might back Yashasvi Jaiswal to fill in for Gill.

NDTV have confirmed through BCCI sources that Shreyas Iyer, who suffered a spleen laceration during the Sydney ODI against Australia last month, is out of action till March. They added the player is recovering steadily. The sources further said that Iyer could be back in action by Indian Premier League 2026.

There are three captaincy options that emerge for India if Shubman Gill misses out South Africa ODIs. They are -

KL Rahul: The wicketkeeper-batter has already led India in the past. He is one of the calmest minds on the field.

Rohit Sharma: The former captain, under whom India reached the 2023 ODI World Cup final, could be re-instated temporarily.

Jasprit Bumrah: If the right-arm pacer is fit to play the ODIs, he too could be chosen as the captain for the series.

"Team India captain Shubman Gill, who suffered a neck injury during the first Test against South Africa, has been ruled out of the second Test in Guwahati. Gill suffered a neck injury on Day 2 of the Kolkata Test and was taken to the hospital for examination after the end of day's play,” said BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia in a statement on Friday, November 21.

“He was kept under observation and discharged the next day. He travelled to Guwahati on 19th November, 2025. Unfortunately, he was not fully fit to feature in the 2nd Test and will head to Mumbai for further assessment of his injury. Rishabh Pant will lead the team in the 2nd Test in Gill's absence," he added.

It is worth noting that veteran cricketers Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who are active only in the ODI format for India, will also be back in the international arena. The duo will receive a lot of focus as fans eagerly wait for them to step onto the ground again.
