Another question in everyone's minds will be who bats at No. 3, filling the shoes of Virat Kohli. Will it be KL Rahul, who normally bats at No. 5 or 6, who will it be Ishan Kishan as a straight swap? With the match resembling more a T20I than an ODI, it will be interesting to see what call Shubman Gill and Gautam Gambhir take on this matter.

This is pretty much India's second-string bowling unit in action today, and they'll face a real test. A massive opportunity, nonetheless, for the likes of Prasidh Krishna, Arshdeep Singh and debutants Gurnoor Brar and Harsh Dubey. Keep an eye out for Nitish Reddy too, who improved his bowling massively during IPL 2026.

"If we had won the toss, we also wanted to bowl first, but again, toss is not in our hands and we need to start well right from the start of the game. We did very well in recent past, but at the same time, it's our first time we are playing India in their own condition. So it's been a tough battle for both the sides and we are excited and ready for that challenge and hopefully we do well here. We have three seamers and three spinners combination. So two seamers, one all-rounder and three spinners," said Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi.

"We will bowl first. It's a bit overcast, so the bowlers might get some help. Looks like a good surface, good wicket to bat on, could be something early on for the pacers. It's all about trying different combinations to see what works for us. We're playing around 15-20 ODIs before the World Cup, so it's about trying things. We're going with two debutants. The absence of Virat Kohli for the Afghanistan ODI series leaves the Indian team management to choose between Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ishan Kishan. Given that Kishan is a floater as well as an able wicketkeeper, one would expect him to make the cut instead of Jaiswal.

Former India player Aakash Chopra informed on-air that the ground staff will need around an hour to clear the water once the rain ends. The visuals from Dharamsala are giving a good news that the rain has reduced to a slight drizzle. However, the covers are still on but there are no puddles on the field. If the drizzle stops, the toss might happen anytime. Fingers crossed. 

As the rain continues to spoil the game in Dharamsala, Team India patiently sits inside the dressing room, hoping for some cricket today. Meanwhile, the groundstaff is hoping for the rain to end soon, so, they can begin with the mopping work. Overs might get deducted anytime soon now. 

Newly appointed T20 captain Shreyas Iyer will bat at number four. Both Rohit and Shreyas linked with the India squad in Chandigarh before the team travelled to the picturesque hill town on Thursday. KL Rahul, the number one wicket-keeper batter in the side, is part of the middle-order and Nitish Kumar Reddy is likely to follow him in the batting line-up at number six.

India are scheduled to play 25 odd ODIs before the 2027 World Cup giving the team enough time to experiment with players and combinations. With two losses in three series, the start to Shubman Gill's ODI captaincy has not been smooth and working alongside head coach Gautam Gambhir, he would be looking to expand his footprint in the dressing room.

No good news coming from Dharamsala as its drizzling. The crowd is seen hiding the umbrellas or donning the raincoats. Two supersoppers are doing rounds on the field as the weather is still gloomy. 

"(On his bowling in the Test match) We’ve been working on that length for quite some time now, and it’s really pleasing for me to see it come off in game time as well. The idea is to bowl a little fuller and hit that uncomfortable length where batsmen find it difficult to make decisions. (Changes for the white-ball) The changes are mainly about the approach and mindset. We’ve played T20s, then a one-off Test, and now we go back to white-ball cricket. As I said before the Test, it’s about adapting to the situation, the format, and the demands of the game. For me, it’s about trying to keep things tight, block the runs, and make it harder for the batsmen. It’s very important," said Prasidh Krishna to the broadcasters.

Covers are being extended to protect the bowlers' run-ups as the steady drizzle persists. It's been raining since morning in Dharamsala, and the prospects of a prompt start look bleak.

Rain seems to have slowed down a bit, but the pitch remains under cover for now. The outfield still looks damp, which means we are unlikely to have a start time anytime soon.

Both captain and vice-captain of India Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer are on the cusp of a huge milestone. Gill needs 47 runs, while Iyer needs 23 runs to complete 3,000 ODI runs. IHoweevr, their milestone has to wait for a while as Dharamsala is facing heavy rai fall at the moment.

The official update from the ground has come and the toss for India vs Afghanistan, 1st ODI match has been delayed. The  weather is dark, gloomy and ground is still under covers. Let's hope for a quick beginning of the match. 

“We have experience of playing in this ground. We played last in 2023 World Cup against Bangladesh. I still remember that. I think in Indian conditions, when it's hot, most probably it's spin wickets. So, I think, I feel that our advantage will be spinners.

"Of course, everyone knows that India is tough opposition in ODI format. They were in the finals last time in the World Cup. We are starting from here our World Cup journey. But no one shows yet which team is going to be qualified for the World Cup. But still we have 7th ranking in our ICC ODI rankings," said Shahidi.

Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi is banking on the Rashid Khan-led spin trio to script their first ever win over India across formats. Speaking to media ahead of the series opener, Shahidi said his team is looking forward to play India in a bilateral series for the first time and he is relying on Rashid, AM Ghazanfar and veteran Mohammad Nabi to challenge the mighty hosts.

As per the visuals coming in Dharamsala, the city is under heavy rainfall. The ground is covered and the toss is highly likely to be delayed, though there's not any official confirmation. Will Rohit Sharma's return get spoiled because of rain? Only time will tell. 

The first ODI between India and Afghanistan is in complete jeopardy. The rain might have the final say in the match. According to AccuWeather.com, there is a high probability of precipitation throughout the day. In the morning, the probability of precipitation is 96 per cent, while in the afternoon it is 90 per cent. Though it reduces to three per cent in the evening, it rises again to 65 per cent at night.

Having nursed a hamstring niggle during the IPL, Rohit Sharma has managed to regain full fitness just in time for the three games against Afghanistan while top draw Virat Kohli will miss the series due to a rare hamstring injury. As India plan for the World Cup in South Africa in October-November 2027, there are doubts over whether the 39-year-old Rohit can last till the ODI showpiece.

Rohit Sharma's match fitness will be tested but India's team management would also closely monitor Nitish Kumar Reddy's performance as a back-up for injury-prone Hardik Pandya when they formally begin their 2027 World Cup preparations with the first ever ODI series against Afghanistan.
