Fast tracks for Challenger Trophy

Ahmedabad:

Fast and bouncy tracks await the India Red, Blue and Green cricket teams as the NKP Salve Challenger Trophy returns to the Sardar Patel Gujarat Stadium at Motera, Gandhinagar, after a gap of almost seven years.

"We have tried to prepare fast and bouncy wickets for the Challenger Trophy," Dhiraj Parsana, the veteran curator at stadium said.

"The pitches have been prepared in such a way that there will be consistent bounce during both the innings of the matches," he said.

The four-day tournament begins from October 25.

"The wickets will, however, remain batsmen-friendly as we have tried to minimise the lateral movement of the ball," the curator added.

Teams can expect to score about 260 runs on the three tracks prepared for the four matches, all of which will be day-and-night affair, Parsana added.

"The entire square (including the three pitches) had been recently re-laid," Parsana said while explaining that a two-layered brick surface (instead of the conventional single layer) has been used in the pitches to provide better bounce.

Pacers like Munaf Patel can exploit the bouncy conditions to their advantage, Parsana said.

The teams - India Reds captained by Mohammed Kaif, India Blue by Virender Sehwag and India Green by Parthiv Patel - are expected to be at Motera by October 24.

"During the course of the tournament, the national selectors will be coming to pick the squad for the upcoming series against Pakistan," Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA) President Narhari Amin said.

"The selectors will be coming on October 25. They will watch the performance of the players and pick the squad on October 27," he added.

The GCA president said both Irfan Pathan and his brother Yusuf, who were part of the Twenty20 World Cup winning squad, will be felicitated with a cash prize of Rs five lakh each at a function in the stadium on October 25.
