Bangladesh ended Day 2 of the first Test in Chittagong against South Africa on 179/4. If they go past the Proteas' total it will only be the second time they have done so against the visitors. The first time such a feat was achieved was in 2008, when they made 192 and then restricted South Africa to 170.(Day 2 Report | Scorecard)
A unique feature of this game was that the openers of one team dismissed their counterparts. Tamim Iqbal and Imrul Kayes fell to Dean Elgar and Stiaan Van Zyl, respectively. This was only the seventh instance of such an event in Test cricket.
Tamim Iqbal and Mahmudullah put on 89-runs for the 3rd wicket. Tamim hit 57 which was his 18th Test half-century and his first vs South Africa. Mahmudullah also registered his maiden fifty against the tourists and it was his 12th overall. Their partnership was also Bangladesh's highest for the 3rd wicket against South Africa. Bangladesh's highest for any wicket was 131-runs for the 2nd wicket back in 2003.
Here are some other statistical highlights from Day 2:
# For the third time, two fifty-plus innings have been recorded in Bangladesh's innings vs South Africa - the instances being Chittagong in 2002-03 and Centurion Park in 2008-09.
# Tamim (7 centuries and 18 fifties) is the second Bangladeshi batsman to manage 25 innings of fifty-plus - the highest being 27 (three hundreds and 24 fifties) by Habibul Bashar.
# Tamim's tally of 3111 (avg 39.89) in 41 matches is a record for Bangladesh in Tests.
# Tamim's tally of 65 international fifty-plus innings is a Bangladeshi record.
# Tamim and Imrul have shared a partnership of 46 - Bangladesh's second highest opening stand vs South Africa in Tests next only to the 52 between Sahariar and Hannan Sarkar vs South Africa at Potchefstroom in October 2002.
