Anup Sridhar braved cramps in his left leg to shock Olympic champion and former world number one Taufik Hidayat for a place in the pre-quarterfinals of the World Badminton Championships on Wednesday.

The world number 41 Indian beat the eighth seeded tournament favourite 21-14, 24-26, 22-20.

The reigning national champion next takes on the winner of the match between 13th seed Muhd Hafiz B Hashim of Malaysia and Scott Evans of Ireland.

In women's singles, Saina Nehwal thrashed 13th seed Juliane Schenk 21-16 21-10 to advance to the pre-quarters where she will take on fourth seed Pi Hongyan of France.
