Aparna crashes out in World Championships

After an impressive opening, India's shuttle queen Aparna Popat disappointed her fans at the World Badminton Championships in Anaheim, USA. The national champion gave a tough fight to Rebecca Bellingam of New Zealand before losing 11-9 8-11 9-11 to crash out of the event last night. World number 27 Popat won her first set but failed to keep the momentum in the one hour long match. The Kiwi player bounced back forcefully pouring cold water on the Indian's hopes of advancing to next round. Popat had defeated 10th seed Petya Nedeltcheva of Bulgaria in only 30 minutes in the opening round. Other exits With Popat's ouster, the Indian challenge in the 14th edition of the championships came to an end. Forty-second ranked Rupesh Kumar and Thomas Sanave also lost their second round match in the men's doubles event. Rupesh and Thomas, who had got a first round bye, lost to second seeds Chandra Wijaya and Sigit Budiarto in straight sets 11-15 11-15. National Champion Arvind Bhat had already made his exit lost to Athen's Olympic bronze medallist and 11th seeded Boonsak Ponsana of Thailand in straight games 6-15 6-9. (PTI)
