Vietnam's Truong breaks 2nd SEA Games record

Vietnam's Truong Thanh Hang broke her second Southeast Asian Games record in two days when she won the women's 800 meters on the track on Saturday.

Hang added to her victory in the 1,500 meters on Friday, winning the 800 in 2 minutes, 2.39 seconds to set one of three new Games records in athletics Saturday, while a further three records were set in swimming.

Indonesia's Triyaningsih smashed the women's 5,000 meters record to win in 15:54.32, taking almost 15 seconds off the old mark.

And in the men's hammerthrow, Arniel Terrera of the Philippines set a new record of 60.98 meters, extending his old mark by 51 centimeters.

In an even spread of golds at the main stadium, Vietnam was best with four: Hang, Van Huyen Vu in the decathlon, Dinh Cuong Nguyen in the men's 800 meters and defending champion Bui Thi Nhung in the women's high jump.

Terrera's win was one of three for the Philippines, along with Rene Herrera in the men's 3000-meter steeplechase, and Marestella Torres, who claimed the women's long jump with her last leap.

Indonesia collected two golds thanks to Triyaningsih and Dwi Ratanawati in the women's discus.

Malaysia won its gold by holding on to win the men's 4x400-meter relay in a blanket finish that saw the medalists seperated by just over half a second.

Thailand won its only athletics gold of the day in the women's 4x400.

In the pool, two eight-year old Games records tumbled.

Singapore's Nicolette Wei-min Teo won the women's 100 meters breaststroke in 1:10.15, knocking 1.2 seconds off the 1999 mark set by compatriot Joecellin Yeo.

Malaysia's Cai Lin Khoo shaved almost a second off the old mark to win the women's 400 meters freestyle in 4:18.20.

Thailand capped the session by defending its women's 4x100 meters freestyle crown, also in a new Games record time of 3:51.86.

Other swimming golds saw Miguel Molina of the Philippines add the men's 200 meters individual medley to his 400 IM title, Huu Viet Nguyen of Vietnam defend his men's 100 meters breaststroke crown from lane two, and Singapore's Zhirong Bryan Tay win the men's 100 meters freestyle.

In weightlifting, Thailand's Suda Chaleephay took the women's 53-kilogram class, while in the men's 56-kilo class, Indonesia's Eko Yuli Erawan won when Vietnam's Anh Tuan Hoang failed in his last two attempts for a golden lift in the clean and jerk.

In rowing, Thailand took gold in both the men's and women's lightweight double sculls and Phuttaraksa Nikree triumphed in the women's single sculls.

Indonesia won the women's lightweight four, Vietnam came first in the men's pair and the men's double sculls was won by the Philippines.

The Philippines also enjoyed success in the fencing, where Emerson Segui won the men's individual foil and Michelle Bruzola the women's individual epee. Vietnam's Thi Le Dung Nguyen took out the women's individual sabre.

In freestyle wrestling, Vietnam won two women's golds through Thi Giang Ngiem in the 55-kilogram class and Thi Qyuen Luong in the 59-kilo class, while Fahrain Syah of Indonesia won the men's 74-kilogram event.

Singapore won all four disciplines as its squad took out the women's team artistic gymnastics ahead of Vietnam and Malaysia.

In table tennis, Jiawei Li and Zi Yang defeated Ning Gao and Bei Bei Sun in an all-Singapore final of the mixed doubles.
