Bajrang Punia Profile

Bajrang Punia, the world number two in the 65kg freestyle arena, will lead India's challenge on the mat at the upcoming Tokyo Olympics. Ahead of the Games in the Japanese capital, Bajrang was named India's flag bearer for the closing ceremony of the showpiece event by the Indian Olympic Association. The star Indian grappler, who has won gold medals at Asian Championships (2017) and Asian Games (2018), has been seeded second for the Tokyo Olympics. Bajrang sealed his Olympic berth with a bronze medal at the World Wrestling Championships in Kazakhstan in September 2019.

Bajrang defeated Tulga Tumur Ochir of Mongolia to clinch a bronze medal for the country and qualify for the Games. The Indian wrestler celebrated his Olympic qualification by clinching gold medal in the Ranking Series in Russia.

Bajrang's road to Tokyo started well as he bagged the gold medal in Rome at the Matteo Pellicone Ranking Series in March this year by again getting the better of Tulga Tumur Ochir, but this time in the gold medal bout.

Just months before the Tokyo Games, Bajrang decided to skip Poland Open and head to Russia to begin his training for the quadrennial event.

During one exhibition bout in Russia in June, Bajrang suffered a right knee injury that forced him to forfeit the event. The Indian star was up against A. Kudyev when he suffered the injury that saw him limping off the mat.

Much to the delight of Indian fans, Bajrang revealed that he has not suffered a major injury and will be fit in time for the showpiece event in Tokyo.
