Janko Tipsarevic upset Gael Monfils in the first round of the Monte Carlo Masters, taking little more than one hour to beat the French Open semifinalist.

Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia upset ninth-seeded Gael Monfils of France 6-3, 6-1 on Tuesday in the first round of the Monte Carlo Masters, taking little more than one hour to beat the French Open semifinalist.

Monfils, who pushed Roger Federer to four sets at Roland Garros last year, struggled badly on second serve and was broken five times by Tipsarevic.

The Serb will meet Simone Bolelli of Italy in the second round.

Fabio Fognini of Italy also reached the second round, coming back from a set and a break down in the third to win 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 against Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic.

Fognini was trailing 3-2 in the decider but won four straight games to set up a second-round match against the 14th-seeded Marin Cilic of Croatia.

In later first-round matches, Lleyton Hewitt took on Marat Safin in a match between two-time Grand Slam champions and former top-ranked players.

In second-round matches, third-seeded Novak Djokovic was playing Oscar Hernandez and No. 4 Andy Murray took on Victor Hanescu.
