Top seed pair Sania Mirza and Marina Hingis's dream of winning their first Grand Slam together came crashing down when the duo suffered a heartbreaking defeat in the quarterfinals of the French Open in Paris on Thursday.
The Indo-Swiss pair lost 5-7, 2-6 to seventh-seeded pair of Bethanie Mattek-Sands of United States and Lucie Safarova of Czech Republic in a gruelling battle.
Sania is yet to win a women's Grand Slam title with her best performance coming in 2011 French Open where she reached the final. She has won three mixed doubles Grand Slams at Australian Open (2009), French Open (2012) and US Open (2014).
Sania had created history by becoming the first female tennis player from India to achieve the world number one rank in doubles, following her title win at the WTA Family Circle Cup with Hingis in April.
