Nick Kyrgios Sparks Fury by Sledging Stan Wawrinka Over His Girlfriend

Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios is acquiring the reputation as the next bad-boy of tennis. In the second round match of the Rogers Cup against two-time Grand Slam winner and world No. 5 Stanislas Wawrinka, Kyrgios apparently sledged Wawrinka and that has not gone down well with the Swiss player. During the course of the match, an on-court microphone picked up Krygios' words in which he was telling Wawrinka, "Kokkinakis banged your girlfriend. Sorry to tell you that mate." (Won't Change Ever: Kyrgios)

Kyrgios was referring to his Australian and Davis Cup team-mate Thanis Kokkinakis and the sledge was apparently made because he was provoked by Wawrinka. The Swiss player retired from the match due to a back injury after he was down 0-4 in the third set. He had won the first set 7-6 but lost the second 3-6.

In the post-match press conference, Wawrinka said that he confronted Krygios but the Australian player avoided him. He also wrote a series of tweets on the incident and said that these kind of things are unacceptable.

What was said I wouldn't say to my worst enemy. To stop so low is not only unacceptable but also beyond belief.

In response, Kyrgios said, "He was getting a bit lippy at me, so I don't know, it's just in the moment sort of stuff. But yeah, I don't really know. I just said it."

The incident marred an ill-tempered match between the two in which Wawrinka yelled at Kyrgios and hit a ball towards his head.

Wawrinka, who has won the Australian and the French Open, has been linked with Donna Vekic, a Croatian tennis player ranked world No. 129.

This controversy is the latest in a series of events that have plagued Kyrgios' playing career. In the past, he was forced to deny accusations of hitting an umpire and in a Davis Cup match against Kazakhstan, he shouted out "I do not want to be here".

He was recently embroiled in a racist spat with Australian swimmer Dawn Frasier on twitter. Following the controversy, Kyrgios issued a public apology to Wawrinka and he posted it on his official facebook page.
