New York:
French seventh seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was eliminated from the US Open on Tuesday as Chilean 11th seed Fernando Gonzalez advanced to the quarter-finals with a 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7/3), 6-4 victory.
Gonzalez will play the winner of a later match between French 13th seed Gael Monfils and Spanish third seed Rafael Nadal, the reigning Australian Open champion who is trying to complete a career Grand Slam.
Gonzalez, trying to become the first South American to win the US Open men's singles crown in 32 years, has a losing record against both possible foes. He is 3-6 life-time against Nadal and has lost both career meetings with Monfils.
A possible semi-final against either Argentine sixth seed Juan Martin Del Potro or Croatian 16th seed Marin Cilic awaits Gonzalez.
"I'm only focused on the next one," Gonzalez said. "I have to play some good tennis and keep my focus."
Gonzalez, the 2007 Australian Open runner-up in his best Slam showing, has not reached the US Open quarter-finals since his first Slam quarter-final appearance in 2002.
