New York:
Italy's Flavia Pennetta announced her retirement from tennis on Saturday after defeating compatriot Roberta Vinci in the US Open final to win her first Grand Slam singles crown.
The 33-year-old had just become the oldest first-time women's major champion.
"This is the way I would like to say goodbye to tennis," she said. "I'm really happy."
