- Yashasvi Jaiswal confronted Sri Lanka's Asitha Fernando after being dismissed in the second Test in Colombo
- "So I find that, on this occasion, Jaiswal crossed the line for sure," said Sanjay Manjrekar
- "Whatever was said is part and parcel of the game. It is our job as batters to keep our cool," he added
Former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar criticised Test opener Yashasvi Jaiswal over the latter's confrontation with Sri Lanka pacer Asitha Fernando. The incident took place on the opening day of the second Test between the two sides in Colombo. During the heated moment, Jaiswal nearly came to blows with Fernando. After being hit for three boundaries in the over, Fernando managed to dismiss Jaiswal on the final ball and appeared to give him a send-off. Jaiswal, who was walking back, turned around to confront the fast bowler. The two exchanged a few words, clashed heads, and there was also a push before they were separated by the rest of the Sri Lankan team.
Manjrekar held Jaiswal responsible for the altercation, indicating that batters should not lose their cool during such moments.
"The guy (Jaiswal) was on his way to the pavilion when he takes a few steps back and comes close to a fielder. And eventually, I think there was contact with the helmet. Am I right in saying that? I think there was contact. If I were the match referee, I would make a serious note of that. Because, see that contact. Jaiswal is the one who advanced towards the bowler," the former India player said on Sony Sports Network.
"Whatever was said is part and parcel of the game. Things are said. It is our job as batters to keep our cool. So I find that, on this occasion, Jaiswal crossed the line for sure," he added.
Devdutt Padikkal starred with yet another Test century on Sri Lankan soil as India capped off Day 1 of the second game with a score of 300 for 5.
Visiting captain Shubman Gill won the toss and opted to bat. India lost KL Rahul cheaply for 18, while Yashasvi Jaiswal fell short of a half-century, scoring 45. Padikkal held one end firm, scoring 117 and registering his second century of the series. Gill chipped in with a fifty (50), while Ravindra Jadeja contributed 43 as India finished the day on 300 for 5. For Sri Lanka, Asitha Fernando was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3 for 46.
