South Asian Games: Security Beefed up as Teams Arrive
The 12th South Asian Games will see teams from India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Maldives and Nepal compete for top glory
The participating teams of the 12th South Asian Games (SAG) arrived for the Shillong-leg on Wednesday, amidst tight security. Apart from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Maldives, Sri Lanka and Nepal are also competing at the February 5-16 regional Games. (South Asian Games: Gurbaj Singh in Men's Hockey Team)
A 15-member strong Pakistan badminton team checked in on Wednesday, while 11 archers from the country would also join soon, a SAG official said. (Pakistan Contingent Gets Government Clearance for South Asian Games)
A strong contingent from Bangladesh competing in archery, football, badminton and wushu have also checked in. Those from Maldives, Nepal and Bhutan are also here.
Meanwhile, tight security has been put in place in all the hotels especially for Pakistan and Bangladesh, a senior police official said. At least 25 security personnel have been assigned to each of the hotels where a Pakistan team was staying.
Indian archers ready!
The Indian archery team is hoping for a big medal haul at the SAG. Both the recurve and compound teams are here.
The compound team comprises P Lily Chanu, V Jyothi Surekha, Swati Dudhwal and Purvasha Sudhir Shinde in the women's category and Rajat Chauhan, Abhishek Verma, Manash Jyoti Changmai and C Srither in the men's category.
The Indian recurve team, meanwhile, comprises Jayanta Talukdar, Binod Swansi, Tarundeep Rai and Gurucharan Besra making up the Recurve men's team and Deepika Kumari, L Bombayla Devi, Madhu Vedwan and Laxmirani Majhi for the women's event.
