Nagpur Test, Day 1: India, England share spoils on a dull day
December 13, 2012 22:53
It was not attractive cricket on a less than handy pitch in Jamtha, Nagpur. Yet, there was dogged batting from England batsmen while Indian spinners toiled hard on Day 1. Ravindra Jadeja and Joe Root made debuts to liven some spirits either side.

India made a couple of unforeseen changes in their line-up with Ravindra Jadeja making his Test debut and Piyush Chawla returning to the Indian whites after a gap of 4 long years. Dhoni did not play a second seamer as was expected. Meanwhile, England too surprised everyone when they gave Joe Root his debut game and in turn not picking the likes of Eoin Morgan, Jonny Bairstow. The visitors also had a forced change in Steven Finn who was ruled out with a back injury and in came Tim Bresnan. (Photo credit: BCCI)

Despite things not looking too bright for India, a must-win situation brought out the best in Ishant Sharma. He was the lone pace bowler and delivered much expected goods by removing Nick Compton early. (Photo credit: BCCI)

England had just got a reprieve when Jonathan Trott, who looked plumb in front, was given not-out by Kumar Dharamsena off the bowling of Ishant. Straight after, India got a bonus with the same umpire giving 'in prime form' skipper Alastair Cook out to one that was not hitting the stumps. The tall fast bowler has got his reward, albeit luckily. (Photo credit: BCCI)

It was then that Pietersen and Trott joined hands at the crease with team score at 16/2. With typical English doggedness, both played brilliant knocks to bring the ship out of troubled waters. They added 86 for the third wicket and never seemed in trouble. (Photo credit: BCCI)

India had included Piyush Chawla to replace Zaheer Khan. Dhoni might have backed himself to win another toss but since Cook won it, the decision backfired slightly. Chawla's leg-spinners were not as successful as team would have wanted. He did take one crucial wicket though by removing the dangerous but out-of-touch Ian Bell. (Photo credit: BCCI)

India's ace though, was the debutant Ravindra Jadeja. He took crucial breakthroughs of Kevin Pietersen and Jonathan Trott to give India some hope of dismissing England for a paltry total. He was exceptional in the field too. (Photo credit: BCCI)

England managed to dig themselves out of the hole yet again as debutant Joe Root and in form wicket-keeper batsman Matt Prior played solid innings of 31 and 34 respectively. They added 60* by the end of day's play. (Photo credit: BCCI)
