Bhopal:
Former national hockey coach V Bhaskaran has once again offered his services as coach. That follows the dramatic sacking of Cedric D Souza midway through the World Cup in Kuala Lumpur. India finished 10th out of a total of 16 teams.
"I felt quite bad at that time, but I do accept responsibility for what happened in the 1998 World Cup. This time however I could have done better, given how easy our draw was. We should have definitely won four of the six matches in our pool," said Bhaskaran.
Bhaskaran also says that the hockey concept of Cedric was a flop and that each player has to have a fixed position. That was a view echoed by Dhanraj Pillay, who claims he wasn't allowed to play at his favourite position as a centre forward.
Concepts might differ but one thing everyone agrees on is having a fixed tenure as a coach. "There should be one coach. One person should be the qualified one who has played for the country--let him have full responsibility for four years," said former Olympic hockey player V J Philip.
India have had more than half a dozen coaches in the last four years and unless that changes, Indian hockey coaches will continue to be referred to as seasonal fruit.
