NHL: Rangers score win over Flyers

Philadelphia:

Brendan Shanahan scored the only goal in a shootout to lead the New York Rangers over Philadelphia 4-3 on Thursday, the Flyers' first home loss of the NHL season.

Shanahan scored on New York's second shootout attempt and beat Martin Biron to give the Rangers their third shootout win of the season.

Shanahan, Fedor Tyutin and Petr Prucha scored for the Rangers in regulation.

Jim Dowd, Danny Briere and Denis Tolpeko scored for the Flyers, who were hoping to move to 7-0 at home for the first time since the 1986.

Senators 3, Sabres 2

At Ottawa, Daniel Alfredsson scored a pair of first-period goals and Martin Gerber made 35 saves for his NHL-leading 12th win in Ottawa's victory over Buffalo.

Alfredsson, who played his 800th regular-season game, opened the scoring with his 14th goal 6:32 in.

The Ottawa captain got his second goal of the period - his 15th of the season - on a power play at 18:53.

Shean Donovan scored in the second period for the Senators, who improved to 15-0-2.

Jochen Hecht and Derek Roy scored for Buffalo, which has lost three straight. Ryan Miller stopped 31 shots for the Sabres.

Bruins 5, Maple Leafs 2

At Boston, Peter Schaefer had a pair of third-period goals, Marc Savard scored 19 seconds into the game and Tim Thomas stopped 34 shots to lead Boston over Toronto.

Thomas, making his ninth straight start and his first since a 45-save effort in a 2-1 win over Buffalo on Saturday, held the league's second-highest scoring team scoreless with 19 saves in the final period.

The Maple Leafs, who have allowed the most goals in the NHL, were a welcome relief for a struggling Bruins' offense.

Boston, held to two goals or less in its previous five games and eight of 10, also got goals from Marco Strum and Glen Metropolit.

Kyle Wellwood had a power-play goal and Alexei Ponikarovsky scored for the Maple Leafs, who have lost four of their past five.

Penguins 3, Islanders 2

At Pittsburgh, Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin extended long points streaks and Georges Laraque scored for the first time in 40 games to help Pittsburgh break a four-game losing streak with a win over New York.

Sergei Gonchar had a goal and an assist and Petr Sykora also scored for the Penguins, who had lost six of seven and also snapped a four-game losing streak at Mellon Arena.

Mike Comrie and Josef Vasicek scored for New York.

Malkin had two assists to extend his point streak to 12 games, and Crosby assisted on Laraque's winning goal late in the second period to extend his career-long streak to 18 games.

Wild 4, Oilers 2

At Edmonton, Alberta, Eric Belanger had a career-high four assists to help Minnesota snap a two-game losing streak with a victory over Edmonton.

Belanger set up goals by Martin Skoula, Marian Gaborik, Kurtis Foster and Mark Parrish and Niklas Backstrom. Jarret Stoll scored twice for the Oilers.

It was the first victory in six tries on the road for the Wild, 8-1-0 in their past nine games against Edmonton.

Predators 5, Blackhawks 4, OT

At Nashville, Tennessee, Martin Erat scored at 19 seconds of overtime to give Nashville a victory over Chicago.

Erat, skating through the low slot, deflected a pass from Radek Bonk off Chicago defenseman Brent Seabrook's skate by goalie Nikolai Khabibulin.

Alexander Radulov scored a goal and added two assists for the Predators.

Jason Williams scored the tying goal with 43 seconds remaining in regulation for Chicago.

Jason Arnott, Vernon Fiddler and Radek Bonk also scored for the Predators. Jonathan Toews, James Wisniewski and Patrick Sharp were the other goal scorers for the Blackhawks.

Sharks 6, Coyotes 0

At Glendale, Arizona, Evgeni Nabokov made 15 saves to record his second shutout in four days to lead San Jose.

Joe Pavelski scored a pair of power-play goals, Patrick Rissmiller had a goal and an assist, and Jeremy Roenick, Devin Setoguchi and Steve Bernier also scored for the Sharks, who have won four straight.

Phoenix lost its third in a row, all against San Jose, and has been outscored 15-1 over that span. The Coyotes also fell to a Western Conference-worst 2-0-7 at home.

Nabokov's shutout was his third this season and the 37th of his career.

Panthers 2, Capitals 1

At Sunrise, Florida, Richard Zednik and Kamil Kreps scored to help Florida snap a four-game losing streak.

Alex Ovechkin scored for Washington, which has dropped six of seven games and 15 of 18 since starting the season 3-0.

Florida goalie Tomas Vokoun made 25 saves. Olie Kolzig finished with 23 stops for Washington.

Jacques Martin won his 80th game as Panthers head coach to pass Terry Murray and move into sole possession of second place on the team's victory list behind Doug MacLean (86).
