The Yashwantrao Chavan Open Maharashtra University (YCMOU) has offered free higher education to hockey player Yuvraj Walmiki. Yuvraj scored in the penalty shootout in the final of the Asian Champions Trophy against Pakistan in China, which India won.
Shrinivas Belsare, head of Corporate Communications at the Nashik-based university, met Yuvraj at his residence here on Friday and handed over to him a letter from YCMOU Vice-Chancellor R Krishnakumar offering him free higher education. "The YCMOU is soon launching a unique degree course in sports and would be happy to have Yuvraj as its first student," Belsare said.
The 21-year-old forward, who hails from a poor economic background, said sportspersons are seldom able to attend the classes and face problems due to inadequate attendance at the time of examinations.
The YCMOU's open learning system is very convenient for sportspersons as it offers them all teaching on Sunday and holidays, he said, and thanked the university for the gesture.
