Dutch women lift Champions Trophy

Buenos Aires, Argentina:

The Netherlands beat Argentina 1-0 on an early goal by Maartje Paumen to win the women's field hockey Champions Trophy at Quilmes for the fifth time. The Dutch forced two penalty corners in the second minute and Paumen, who scored twice in their World Cup final victory last October, slammed in the second one. The Netherlands' steely defence then made it hard work for Argentina just to cross into Dutch territory. In the bronze-medal match, Olympic champion Germany downed Australia 2-0, and Rika Komozawa's second-half goals led Japan past Spain 2-0 for the second time in two days and to fifth place. The Trophy title was the Netherlands' third in the past four years. For overall titles since the first tournament in 1987, it trails only Australia, which has won six. Argentina won its only Trophy in 2001.
