San Jose: Tiger Woods won the Buick Invitational, his first tournament back on the PGA Tour after undergoing knee surgery in December. Woods closed with a 4-under 68 for a four-shot victory at Torrey Pines. Tiger won for the 35th time on the PGA Tour, and it was his 11th tour victory by at least four shots. It was an ideal location for golf along the California coast in San Diego, as Woods started the final round of the Buick Invitational with a one-stroke lead over Brad Faxon.Tiger extended his lead, thanks in part, to his approach shot on the 5th hole to set up birdie. A short time later, Woods sank the birdie putt and moved to 14 under par. What was hoped to be a battle between Woods and Phil Mickelson never materialized, as Mickelson shot himself out of contention early in the round on the 6th hole when his bunker shot rolled through the green. He fell five strokes back after Tiger's bunker shot on the same hole landed close enough for Woods to make birdie and go to 15 under par.The defining shot came at the 231-yard 11th hole, when his 4-iron never left the flag and stopped 3 feet in front of the hole. Woods made a birdie and was back to 15 under.Meanwhile, the rest of the field was in a battle for second, as Brad Faxon made birdie on the 17th hole to take a share of second place with Carl Pettersson. However, at almost the exact same moment, Pettersson made birdie on the 18th hole to take sole possession of second place. Pettersson of Sweden had a 69 to finish four strokes behind in just his second tournament on the tour, although he was never a factor.Woods closed out his round for the victory, as he finished 16 under par for the event, and won $810,000.
