Sindelar wins the Wachovia Championship

Charlotte, North Carolina: Joey Sindelar earned his seventh career victory at the Wachovia Championship on Sunday, as he beat Aaron Oberholser on the second play-off hole. Sindelar was 14 years and 370 tournaments removed from his last PGA Tour victory, and had spent the last five years struggling to keep his tour card. His victory drought was the second-longest on tour behind Ed Fiori, who went 409 starts between victories. The event was held at the Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina. Vijay Singh held out hope for a third consecutive victory and got within one shot of the lead with an eagle on the 15th hole, but a bogey-double bogey finish dropped him into a tie for 10th, four shots behind. Tiger Woods, was having his share of trouble, but gave himself a chance with a 30-foot birdie putt on the 17th hole to get one stroke off the lead at 10 under. He closed with a 68 and joined Carlos Franco one shot behind. Meanwhile, Aaron Oberholser appeared to have this locked up when his 5-wood into the 15th hole stopped 8 feet away to set up an eagle attempt. Oberholser converted the putt and pumped his fist with passion as he jumped to a three stroke lead at 13 under par. But Sindelar still had some magic left. His signature shot was a 4-iron that perfectly caught a ridge he didn't even know existed on the 17th green, and fed to 3 feet below the hole. Sindelar made the birdie putt to get to 11 under par, two strokes back. But after Oberholser had bogeys on both the 16th and 17th holes, he needed a par putt on the finishing hole to force a play-off with Sindelar. In the end, Sindelar converted a short par putt for the win on the second play-off hole. Sindelar, awash in joy and disbelief, earned 1.08 million dollar for his win, more than he ever made in any of his previous 20 years on the PGA Tour. (AP)
