Phil Mickelson delivered another dramatic finish in a major golf tournament today, flopping a chip out of deep rough for a birdie on the final hole and a one-shot victory in the PGA Championship.
It was a sweet conclusion to a major championship season that had gone sour for the American.
He put together his best golf of the summer stretched over five days at Baltusrol with a storm-delayed final round at the PGA Championship.
While a Monday finish may not have been what the PGA of America wanted for the final major of the season, the morning round produced plenty of drama, with crowd favourite Phil Mickelson clinging to a one-stroke lead.
After making a short par putt on 14 to begin the day, Mickelson fell into a tie with Australian Steve Elkington with a bogey on the par 3 16th.
Denmark's Thomas Bjorn joined in a share of the lead with a fabulous birdie putt on 17.
Mickelson gave himself a great opportunity for birdie on 17 as well, with a well-placed approach that got the galleries roaring.
Elkington had a chance for the outright lead on 18, but saw his ball roll just left of the cup.
Mickelson's birdie attempt on 17 seemed to break perfectly, but also rolled slightly left.
After a well-played bunker shot, Bjorn's opportunity to take the outright lead came on 18.
His birdie putt looked destined to fall, but caught the right lip of the cup and rolled to a few inches away.
With only Mickelson and playing partner Davis Love III on the course, Mickelson capped a great drive with a beautifully hit 4-wood to the greenside rough.
Hitting a near-perfect chip-shot, Mickelson left little doubt the championship was his.
While both co-leaders watched from inside the clubhouse, Mickelson converted a two-foot par putt to win his second major championship.
Mickelson finished at 4-under 276 and earned $1.17 million US Dollars for his fourth victory of the year, matching Tiger Woods and Vijay Singh for the most on the PGA Tour this year.
He also moved ahead of Ernie Els to No. 3 in the world rankings. (AP)
