California: World's number two golfer, Ernie Els has been knocked out of the World Golf matchplay championships in La Costa, California. He suffered a shock loss at the hands of 63rd seed New Zealander Phil Tataurangi. Joining him out of the tournament is another big name, fifth seed Sergio Garcia, who threw away an early lead, losing two and one to defending champion Kevin Sutherland of the USA. European number one Retief Goosen also tumbled out in the first round, beaten by the experienced American Jay Haas by four and three. (AP)
